The PRIME-6G project, backed by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program and supported by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), marks a pivotal advancement in industrial manufacturing through next-generation 6G technologies. With a budget of EUR 7.76 million and led by IMDEA Networks, this groundbreaking initiative aims to embed seamless, autonomous, and adaptive 6G connectivity directly into physical factory environments, setting the stage for intelligent and resilient manufacturing ecosystems.

Industrial factories face mounting pressure to evolve rapidly, overcoming legacy infrastructure and fragmented systems that hinder their operational potential. PRIME-6G envisions a future where manufacturing plants become interconnected ecosystems reacting in real time, empowered by deterministic communications, advanced industrial automation, and intelligent computing architectures. Such integration promises enhanced flexibility, sustainability, and human-centered design in production workflows.

Over a 30-month timeline, the consortium will construct a holistic platform leveraging a Cloud-Edge Continuum that integrates 6G connectivity with AI-optimized resource management, robotics, and real-time sensory feedback. This platform is engineered to deliver agile service provisioning and ensure robust, efficient operation across smart manufacturing facilities.

The project incorporates two primary use cases: AURORA and SENTINEL. AURORA focuses on deterministic 6G-powered control of robotic systems, achieving ultra-low latency and reliability essential for real-time automation. Key elements include AI-driven network orchestration, configurable cobotic subnetworks, digital twins, and autonomous AI agents enhancing operational agility and scalability.

IMDEA Networks spearheads the SENTINEL use case, uniquely employing 6G sensing capabilities to create digital twins of factory floors without the need for additional dedicated sensors. By repurposing the existing communication infrastructure for environmental monitoring, SENTINEL enhances situational awareness, facilitates human-robot collaboration, and streamlines sensor costs, illustrating 6G’s expanded role beyond connectivity into intelligent system enablement.

These innovations will be validated in controlled laboratory environments at NEXTONIC in Madrid and Siemens AG’s Munich facility before integration at ARENA2036 in Stuttgart. This final demonstration stage aims to showcase a unified TRL 6-7 platform where autonomous logistics and environmental sensing merge cohesively in real-world industrial contexts.

Bringing together 13 partners from six European nations, the PRIME-6G Consortium unites expertise in telecommunications, AI, robotics, and industrial automation under the coordination of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The collaboration underscores Europe’s commitment to pioneering smart manufacturing solutions propelled by 6G technology.

PRIME-6G’s approach highlights the transformative impact that 6G connectivity can deliver by marrying deterministic network performance with AI-driven intelligence—creating not only faster and more reliable communication but also enabling factories to self-optimize in real time. This vision realizes a new era where digital and physical manufacturing processes interlace flawlessly, driving the future of sustainable and resilient industrial production.
