Researchers have introduced a quantum similarity estimation algorithm that uses an entangled discrete-continuous representation of data together with a modified SWAP-test protocol built from conditional displacement and controlled-SWAP operations. The work, published in Scientific Reports, also derives the exact analytical form of the similarity metric the protocol produces and supplies a feasible circuit implementation.
According to the abstract, the team demonstrated the method on interferometric images generated numerically from an experimentally viable atomtronics setup, meaning the demonstration was a simulation rather than a laboratory measurement.
Building on this behaviour, the authors report that their method allows a precise identification of the nonlinearity that originates from interatomic interactions within the condensate. This is a proposed direction arising from the analysis, not a demonstrated sensing device.
Beyond the atomtronics application, the team performed a quantum simulation of the proposed circuit under shot noise using public benchmark datasets, and analysed the resource requirements and computational complexity of the algorithm. The article was published on 24 October 2026 and is available as open access. The authors note that the shared version is citable and carries a permanent DOI, subject to further editorial edits before the final version of record.
