Justin Lui, MD, MS, FCCP, ATSF, a pulmonary and critical care physician and researcher at Boston University, is one of seven physicians selected for the 2026 Network Rising Star Award for the Pulmonary Vascular and Cardiovascular Network from the American College of Chest Physicians. Established in 2024, the honor recognizes contributions to clinical care, education, research or other scholarly activity, as well as growth and potential within the American College of Chest Physicians’ seven networks. The announcement identifies Lui as an assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and a physician at Boston Medical Center.

Lui’s clinical responsibilities include attending Boston Medical Center’s pulmonary hypertension consultation service and serving on its pulmonary embolism response team. The team is a multidisciplinary collaboration involving cardiology, interventional radiology and cardiac surgery; according to the announcement, it guides clinical management of patients with acute pulmonary embolism. His professional work extends beyond patient care to several national organizations. He serves on the CHEST Pulmonary Vascular Section Steering Committee and is a member of the American Thoracic Society Clinical Practice Guideline Committee on the Management of Pulmonary Hypertension. He previously chaired the Early Career Working Group for the Assembly on Pulmonary Circulation and is a member of the American Heart Association Early Career Committee of the Council on Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care, Perioperative and Resuscitation. Lui also serves on the editorial boards of Chest and the Journal of Intensive Care Medicine.

His research centers on pulmonary hypertension associated with systemic sclerosis, an autoimmune disease, and uses cardiopulmonary phenotyping to characterize patients across multiple conditions. The work integrates pulmonary medicine, cardiology and rheumatology, drawing on biochemistry, epidemiology and biostatistics. The award announcement does not report results from a new clinical trial, nor does it identify a single tested intervention; instead, it describes a broader research program examining pulmonary hypertension related to systemic sclerosis through several specialties and analytical approaches. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, research foundations and industry. In addition to this work, Lui has authored more than 45 peer-reviewed journal articles and one book chapter.

Lui is also involved in medical education and residency recruitment. Within Boston University’s Department of Medicine, he serves as the subspecialty education coordinator in pulmonary and critical care medicine and is a member of the internal medicine residency program’s intern selection committee. In 2025, he received the Top BMC Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes 10 faculty members for their impact on trainees at Boston Medical Center or the VA Boston Health Care System. The CHEST recognition brings together the areas listed in the award criteria: clinical care, education, research and other scholarly activity. The announcement is an award and professional-profile report rather than a scientific study, so it provides no measured clinical outcomes or evidence that the award reflects a change in patient outcomes.
