INSEAD, renowned as "The Business School for the World," has reached a momentous milestone by celebrating the fifth anniversary of its San Francisco Hub for Business Innovation. This celebration was marked during the second Americas Conference held from February 7 to February 8, 2025. The conference brought together over 250 leaders from the realms of business, government, academia, and the INSEAD community, creating a vibrant platform for discussion and collaboration. The central theme of the conference was “The Future is Now: Bridging Business, Technology, and Humanity,” illustrating the seamless integration of these vital sectors in addressing contemporary challenges.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in rich discussions, with a primary focus on harnessing the unprecedented potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI’s integration into business practices raises significant ethical questions and the importance of prioritizing human welfare while embracing technological innovation. The dialogue emphasized that business leaders must penetrate the AI hype, advocating for a balanced consideration of technology alongside the core values of society. Moreover, attendees explored themes such as the necessity for organization-wide training and promoting an experimental mindset among leaders to navigate the disruptive landscape ushered in by groundbreaking technological advances.

Addressing the audience, INSEAD’s Dean, Francisco Veloso, articulated the importance of this anniversary, stating, “Celebrating five years of excellence at our San Francisco Hub is a significant milestone for INSEAD.” Dean Veloso highlighted the hub’s accomplishments, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge programs and educational experiences that fuse global standards with regional needs. The vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem of the Bay Area, characterized by its wealth of innovative technology and venture capital, provides an optimal setting for INSEAD’s objective of fostering impactful educational initiatives.

In the past five years, the INSEAD San Francisco Hub has established a formidable presence in North America. Since its inauguration in 2020, the hub has effectively positioned itself as a key player in the local and regional landscape of innovation. From its inception, the hub has consistently strived to reinforce its influence through various milestones, with each year bringing significant contributions to the domain of business education and corporate partnerships. During the unpredictable periods brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the hub showcased resilience by transitioning to virtual learning environments, thus maintaining connections among alumni and industry leaders across North America.

As its offerings broadened, the hub welcomed its first Master in Management class in 2021, which comprised a diverse cohort of 21 students. This development marked a pivotal step in mobilizing global exchanges, granting participants invaluable insights connecting them directly with esteemed faculty and industry experts. Such diverse interactions are crucial for nurturing well-rounded professionals who can adeptly navigate the complexities of modern business landscapes.

In 2022, the hub expanded its educational programs tailored for U.S. companies, providing enhanced opportunities for executive learning. Immersive experiences in Silicon Valley were enabled through distinctive programs like the Global Executive MBA Key Management Challenges, as well as MBA electives that delve into the intricacies of building successful enterprises in Silicon Valley. These custom programs reflect INSEAD’s focus on delivering practical knowledge that resonates with real-world situations faced by business leaders.

Additionally, 2023 marked a significant year with the inaugural INSEAD Americas Conference, setting the stage for vital discussions around sustainable innovation and its impact on both business practices and societal progress. The year also heralded the launch of the INSEAD Business Sustainability Series aimed at cultivating an understanding of sustainable practices in various sectors, aligning strategic goals with sustainable development principles.

The hub’s trajectory of growth is further evidenced as partnerships were established with globally recognized institutions throughout 2024, including the World Economic Forum, Harvard Business School, and Stanford GSB. These collaborations elevate the hub’s status as a focal point for innovation, facilitating a rich exchange of ideas that bolster thought leadership in business education.

The recent conference unveiled groundbreaking initiatives including the INSEAD Institute of Human and Machine Intelligence. Spearheaded by Dean of Research, Lily Fang, this institute is dedicated to exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence with various facets of business operations and societal impact. By remaining at the forefront of technological advancements, this institute promises a continuous exploration of the implications of these developments on human welfare.

Furthermore, the launch of The AI-First Entrepreneurship Lab, directed by Assistant Professor of Strategy Hyunjin Kim, aims to empower entrepreneurs in this digital age. The lab’s structure comprises a comprehensive acceleration program designed to enable the creation of high-growth startups. By providing in-person experiences alongside a robust global support network of innovators and mentors, the lab fosters an environment ripe for innovation and growth, illustrating INSEAD’s commitment to facilitating entrepreneurial success.

As the conference progressed, a significant declaration came from San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, who proclaimed February 7 as "INSEAD Day." In his remarks, Chiu expressed the importance of collaboration between government, academia, and business. Such partnerships are instrumental for driving innovative policies that enhance San Francisco’s stature as a global business and technology hub, reiterating INSEAD’s vital role in these efforts.

To celebrate the spirit of excellence in sustainability, the conference also featured the second INSEAD Business Sustainability Award. Led by Professor Karel Cool, this prestigious accolade acknowledges alumni achieving remarkable feats in balancing business success with sustainable practices. The award recognized exceptional individuals who demonstrate innovative thinking in tackling pressing challenges related to sustainability, further emphasizing INSEAD’s focus on promoting responsible business strategies.

Among the awardees were remarkable leaders making substantial contributions in sustainability. Paul Manwell, founder of TC Labs, is pioneering the application of Generative AI to improve energy efficiency in traditional industrial sectors. Similarly, Georgina Grenon leads sustainability efforts for the Paris Olympics, ensuring that the 2024 Games set a benchmark for environmental responsibility. As well, Zach Brown and Rafael Zanardo Nascimento exemplify innovative practices in food production and energy solutions, respectively, directly aligning with INSEAD’s commitment to fostering initiatives that benefit society at large.

The fifth anniversary celebration and associated conference at INSEAD’s San Francisco Hub is more than a retrospective acknowledgment of achievements; it stands as a beacon of future possibilities and responsibilities in the intersection of business and technology. As the hub embraces the future, it continues to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to not only advancing their organizations but also enhancing the quality of life globally through innovative solutions and responsible leadership.

Through its unique approach, INSEAD is committed to delivering business education that not only prepares leaders for success but also encourages them to act ethically and responsibly in their endeavors.

As the world continues to evolve rapidly, especially in the realms of technology and business, the insights and initiatives stemming from the INSEAD San Francisco Hub for Business Innovation serve as a clarion call for leaders to engage with transformative ideas and practices. The intersection of knowledge, technology, and a profound commitment to human welfare is not merely a vision for INSEAD; it is an ongoing reality that drives their mission in the years to come.
