Toronto-based open access publisher JMIR Publications has released five News and Perspectives features examining this week’s digital health headlines, spanning topics from AI-driven resuscitation training to the psychological risks of ubiquitous GLP-1 advertising online. The articles, written by the publisher’s Scientific News Editor and a network of specialist correspondents, reflect a growing effort to bring academic rigor to science journalism about emerging health technologies. Together, the features highlight both the promise and the unresolved questions surrounding AI tools in clinical settings, the commercial forces shaping weight loss discourse, and the potential of consumer devices to detect severe mental health crises before they escalate.

In “From Reactive to Proactive Care: Using AI to Detect Gender-Based Violence in Brazil,” correspondent Luke Taylor reports on ClarIA, a tool developed by the global health organization Vital Strategies. The system uses AI to search for signs of gender-based violence in a patient’s clinical notes and medical history, flagging possible unreported cases to health care professionals. According to Taylor, the program has so far led to eight formal GBV reports. The initiative represents a shift from reactive to proactive care: rather than waiting for women to disclose violence themselves, the tool could connect them with help more often and earlier, potentially saving lives in a country where femicide remains a serious concern.

Correspondent Anna Zucker turns to the psychological effects of GLP-1 advertising in “GLP-1 Ads Are Everywhere. What Are They Doing to Our Body Image?” Zucker notes that the relatively new explosion of GLP-1 ads, particularly online, where users can be easily directed toward telehealth services, means that research on their effects is so far limited. Still, clinicians and patients are already describing a real impact. According to one study cited in the article, these ads often emphasize emotional transformation and personal growth, linking weight to self-worth and potentially exploiting or even exacerbating body image insecurities. The feature raises questions about how direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical marketing, amplified by telehealth platforms, may shape how people perceive their own bodies.

Two additional features explore AI’s expanding role in health care communication and emergency response. In “What Patients Think of AI-Assisted Health Care Communication,” correspondent Jenna Congdon speaks with professionals and patient advocates about how AI tools affect patient experiences. Congdon writes that patients may accept AI when it makes health care more responsive and efficient, but acceptance fades when AI creates uncertainty about who is responsible for the communication or whether the clinician meaningfully engaged with the message. Meanwhile, in “From Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training to Guiding Bystanders: The Growing Role of AI in Resuscitation,” correspondent Michelle Falci discusses two AI-driven tools: ChatCPR, which surpassed human dispatchers in meeting American Heart Association guidelines in a proof of concept study evaluating the model’s generated CPR guidance, and the Elevate SMART Manikin, a technology-enhanced CPR manikin that could allow trainees to practice or learn without an instructor present.

Finally, in “Catching the ‘Pink Flags’: Using Smart Devices to Spot Early Signs of Postpartum Psychosis,” correspondent Benedette Cuffari speaks with experts about how wearable devices could potentially help clinicians identify discrepancies pointing to subtle shifts in mood and behavior, such as irritability, insomnia, and racing thoughts, which are early warning signs of postpartum psychosis. The condition can produce severe symptoms and even result in tragedy, making early detection a critical goal. Cuffari’s article also examines postpartum mobile health initiatives, including therapeutic AI chatbots, that could help new mothers access mental health care more readily.

The roundup arrives as JMIR Publications’ News and Perspectives section, the newest addition to the publisher’s portfolio, continues to expand its coverage of digital health research. Established to bring the rigor and integrity of academic publishing to scientific journalism, the section features expert-driven content from Scientific News Editor Kayleigh-Ann Clegg, PhD, and a network of specialist correspondents. The publisher describes the section as a way to keep the digital health community informed about emerging tools and trends, from AI screening programs to consumer wearables, before they reach widespread clinical adoption.
