Dirk Leuffen Elected as New Rector of the University of Konstanz, Pioneering a Future of Interdisciplinary Excellence

In a landmark decision on July 10, 2026, the Senate and University Council of the University of Konstanz jointly elected Professor Dirk Leuffen as the institution’s next rector. Leuffen, currently serving as Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Impact, will assume his six-year term in spring 2027, succeeding Rector Katharina Holzinger. Holzinger’s tenure concludes in February 2027 following the university’s mandatory retirement policy.

Leuffen brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to his new role. A seasoned political scientist whose research centers on international politics, he has been a faculty member at Konstanz since 2011. His leadership as Vice Rector—spanning 2015 to 2019 and resuming in 2024—has been instrumental in advancing university research infrastructure and fostering early career scholars. Notably, Leuffen advocates for amplifying synergistic collaborations between academic research and societal needs, including nurturing university start-ups to translate scientific innovations into real-world impact.

Leuffen’s vision for the University of Konstanz reimagines its role as a global beacon of interdisciplinary research. He emphasizes the necessity of integrating diverse academic disciplines to tackle complex societal challenges that transcend traditional fields. Under his stewardship, the university aims to enhance its international stature, attracting leading researchers and promising talents worldwide through research-oriented teaching programs attuned to contemporary global issues.

Elevating industry and public engagement is also a cornerstone of Leuffen’s strategy. By intensifying partnerships beyond academia, he seeks to ensure that research outcomes contribute tangible benefits to both regional communities and the broader society. This forward-looking approach aligns with his commitment to maintaining an open, connected, and socially responsible scholarly environment.

University Council Chair Henrike Hartmann praised Leuffen’s deep institutional knowledge and strategic acumen, citing his tenure as a critical asset as Konstanz navigates heightened competition for research excellence and international visibility. Rector Holzinger expressed confidence that Leuffen’s blend of sharp analytical skills and dedication will effectively steer the university into a dynamic future, referencing his passion for initiatives such as Forum Konstanz—an ambitious project aimed at reinforcing the university’s research ecosystem.

Leuffen’s academic pedigree includes a doctorate from the University of Mannheim, recognized with the prestigious Lorenz-von-Stein Award. Prior to his appointment at Konstanz, he contributed as a senior researcher at ETH Zurich. Outside the university, Leuffen engages in governance roles that influence research training and evaluation, including participation in the committees for International Max Planck Research Schools and membership on the University Council of Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen.

As Leuffen assumes office, the University of Konstanz stands poised to expand its commitment to cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and societal engagement—reaffirming its position as an innovative leader in global academia.
