In a groundbreaking move to revolutionize biological research and imaging technologies, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) has announced the formation of a new grand challenge aimed at advancing imaging technologies for the observation and understanding of living cells and organisms. This initiative is a collaboration between its two esteemed institutes, the CZ Biohub San Francisco and the CZ Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging, uniting their expertise at a new science campus being established in Redwood City, California, adjacent to CZI headquarters.

The ambitious project aims to leverage technological innovations to unlock insights into the complex dynamics of biological systems. Priscilla Chan, co-founder and co-CEO of CZI, underscored the critical timing for this collaboration, linking technological prowess with scientific inquiry. The convergence of these disciplines holds the potential to create new tools that reveal hidden processes within complex systems, particularly in vital areas such as neuroscience and immunology. The goal is to deepen our understanding of how these systems operate at a molecular level and how they unravel in the face of disease.

Taking the helm of this exciting initiative is Scott Fraser, CZI’s vice president of science grant programs, who will become the president of the newly constituted Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute on April 1. Fraser, known for his pioneering work in biological imaging, will guide the ambitious grand challenge, working closely with the teams at the CZ Biohub and CZI leadership. His innovative research has previously focused on developing techniques that visualize biological processes in living organisms and enhancing 4D imaging techniques for observing embryonic development.

A hallmark of the Biohub model has been its collaborative and interdisciplinary approach. The San Francisco Biohub emerged as one of CZI’s earliest, significant investments in scientific research, designed to break down barriers between disciplines and tackle large-scale scientific challenges. This collaborative environment has already produced remarkable achievements, including the completion of a comprehensive map of zebrafish embryo development and a first-draft atlas housing over 1.1 million human cells.

The success of the original Biohub has inspired similar endeavors in Chicago and New York, with each aiming to harness collaboration among scientists and engineers to accelerate scientific discovery. At the forefront of these efforts is the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute, which has prioritized the development of novel imaging technologies and visualization tools that can elucidate the complexities of cellular and subcellular dynamics. Central to their mission has been the rapid advancements in cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) techniques that have significantly reduced pipeline times, thus enabling researchers to overcome critical challenges in structural biology.

The vision for the new Biohub extends beyond traditional imaging methods, emphasizing the creation of innovative systems that can capture the ongoing changes within living organisms. As biological systems are inherently dynamic, current imaging technologies often provide only static snapshots that fail to convey the complexities of cellular interactions, tissue organization, and organ function. To address this limitation, the combined expertise of the teams will work on developing breakthrough imaging technologies that integrate molecular analysis to capture biological processes across various scales—from individual proteins to entire organisms.

By combining these cutting-edge imaging technologies with rigorous molecular analysis, the research aims to validate virtual cell models, facilitate advanced cell engineering strategies, and uncover the fundamental principles underlying tissue engineering. This exciting venture represents a significant leap forward in our ability to visualize the intricacies of cellular life, enabling scientists to better understand the mechanisms of health and disease.

Scott Fraser expressed his enthusiasm in leading such a transformative research initiative, indicating that merging the expertise of the San Francisco Biohub with the Imaging Institute creates an unparalleled opportunity to reshape biological exploration. He emphasized the potential to revolutionize how scientists uncover and harness the processes underlying life itself, marking this collaboration as a significant moment in the landscape of scientific research.

The new Biohub will be strategically located on a modern science campus in Redwood City, set to open in 2027. This facility, designed to promote multidisciplinary collaboration, will bring together top-tier scientists, engineers, and experts in artificial intelligence and machine learning to cultivate innovation in biological research. The synergy between these disciplines is seen as essential for developing the tools that will lead to breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of diseases.

Joe DeRisi, president of the CZ Biohub San Francisco, highlighted the evolution of the Biohub model as a natural progression towards achieving the grand challenge. He expressed excitement for the future collaboration with Scott Fraser to enhance the work of the organization as it integrates with the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. The commitment to explore meaningful scientific questions has always been at the core of the Biohub’s mission, building on its foundational tenets established since its inception in 2016.

As the CZI embarks on this new chapter, it reaffirms its dedication to long-term investments in science and technology that address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. This initiative is more than just a merger of two institutes; it is a powerful challenge that seeks to transform our capability to understand human biology at its most fundamental levels. In doing so, CZI not only aims to contribute to scientific knowledge but also aspires to impact clinical applications that could significantly alter the trajectory of disease prevention, management, and cure in the future.

The combination of these groundbreaking technologies and the collaborative ethos fostered within this new center will undoubtedly become a focal point for scientific inquiry and innovation in the years to come. This initiative stands as a testament to the CZI’s vision—a future where the mysteries of life are illuminated through unprecedented scientific insights.

As we look ahead, the intersection of biological research and advanced imaging technologies promises to spark the next generation of discoveries, fundamentally changing our understanding of the living world. With CZI leading the charge, the future of biological imaging and research appears brighter than ever, paving the way for discoveries that could reshape how we perceive health and disease at the cellular level.

As this ambitious journey unfolds, researchers, scientists, and the broader community eagerly anticipate the exciting developments that will emerge from the synergy of the CZ Biohub San Francisco and the Chan Zuckerberg Imaging Institute. This collaboration not only has the potential to yield transformative scientific advancements but also provides hope for innovative solutions to some of the most significant challenges facing humanity today.
