Brian Lindshield, PhD, Appointed Interim Editor in Chief of Current Developments in Nutrition, Ushering in a New Era of Open-Access Nutrition Science

In a significant move poised to influence the trajectory of nutrition science publishing, the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) has announced the appointment of Brian Lindshield, PhD, as the Interim Editor in Chief of its flagship open-access journal, Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN), effective July 1, 2026. This appointment marks a pivotal moment for CDN, ensuring leadership stability while promising continued innovation and growth in the dissemination of nutrition research.

Dr. Lindshield, currently a Professor and Associate School Director at Kansas State University’s School of Health Sciences, brings to the helm a robust portfolio of experience in nutrition scholarship and editorial stewardship. His longstanding involvement with ASN journals — spanning from his six-year tenure as an academic editor for CDN between 2017 and 2023 — underscores his commitment to scientific rigor and open-access principles. His research expertise, notably in micronutrient fortification and global nutrition interventions, uniquely positions him to guide the journal in addressing complex, worldwide nutrition challenges.

Since its inception, Current Developments in Nutrition has emerged as a vital platform dedicated to publishing high-impact, scientifically rigorous studies across the nutrition continuum. As an open-access journal, CDN fosters inclusive access to cutting-edge nutrition science, facilitating the free exchange of knowledge among researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and public health practitioners globally. Its publication model eschews novelty as the sole criterion for acceptance, instead emphasizing methodological soundness and meaningful contributions to the broader field of nutrition.

Reflecting on his appointment, Dr. Lindshield expressed enthusiasm about contributing to CDN’s mission. “Being part of CDN since its launch — including coauthoring its inaugural article — has allowed me a profound connection to the journal’s evolution,” he stated. “I am eager to collaborate with ASN leadership, editorial colleagues, reviewers, and authors to ensure the journal continues to publish timely, methodologically sound research that advances nutrition science worldwide.”

The appointment follows the conclusion of Jack Odle, PhD’s decade-long tenure as CDN’s inaugural Editor in Chief. Dr. Odle is credited with shaping the journal into a globally influential forum for open-access nutrition research, attaining a strong initial impact factor and extending the journal’s reach to diverse international audiences. His leadership cultivated innovations such as manuscript transfer pathways, which streamline submission processes across ASN’s portfolio, and introduced special issues curated by guest editors, enhancing the journal’s topical agility.

Moreover, under Dr. Odle’s guidance, CDN broadened its thematic horizons by establishing dedicated sections for emerging nutrition domains. These areas include sustainability in food systems, implementation science, and the nutrition of indigenous populations—reflecting the journal’s forward-looking approach to nutrition research. Dr. Odle also prioritized the mentoring and development of associate and academic editors, many of whom have advanced to key editorial positions, including roles with The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Odle expressed pride in his stewardship and optimism for the journal’s future. “Leading CDN over the past decade to establish its scholarly significance has been a professional highlight,” he remarked. “I am confident that Dr. Lindshield’s vision and expertise will propel the journal to new heights and continue enhancing its global impact.”

Naïma Moustaïd-Moussa, PhD, President of the American Society for Nutrition, lauded the transition as emblematic of ASN’s commitment to scientific leadership and open-access advancement. She highlighted Dr. Odle’s foundational achievements and affirmed Dr. Lindshield’s suitability to lead CDN into its next phase. “Dr. Lindshield represents the future of nutrition science — a champion for open access and an advocate for the success of every author contributing to ASN journals,” she noted.

The journal’s momentum continues to build as ASN prepares for its annual meeting, NUTRITION 2026, scheduled for July 25-28, 2026, at National Harbor, Maryland. This event will offer researchers and professionals a unique opportunity to connect with Dr. Lindshield and engage with the vibrant nutrition science community. ASN encourages late-breaking and encore abstract submissions until May 11, evidencing its dedication to fostering timely scientific discourse.

Current Developments in Nutrition remains devoted to publishing a comprehensive array of study designs, from basic nutritional physiology to large-scale population health interventions. Its editorial standards emphasize scientific rigor and integrity, leveraging peer review to uphold quality while ensuring rapid dissemination through its open-access platform. This approach aligns with ASN’s broader mission to democratize nutrition knowledge and catalyze evidence-based practice and policy worldwide.

Dr. Lindshield’s leadership is anticipated to deepen CDN’s alignment with emerging trends in nutrition science, including implementing innovative publishing models and broadening the journal’s reach to encompass underrepresented research areas. His advocacy for open educational resources complements the journal’s vision of accessible, transparent scientific communication that benefits the entire nutrition ecosystem.

As the nutrition science community looks toward ASN’s centennial, this editorial transition signals a renewed commitment to stewardship and innovation. Under Dr. Lindshield’s guidance, Current Developments in Nutrition is poised not only to maintain its status as a trusted outlet for nutrition research but also to evolve as a dynamic forum responsive to the rapidly changing landscape of nutritional knowledge and global health needs.
