Bentham Science Launches New Journal, Current Surgical Endoscopy

Bentham Science Publishers has announced the launch of Current Surgical Endoscopy, a new peer-reviewed journal designed to track the rapid evolution of endoscopic surgery and the technologies supporting minimally invasive care. The publication is now accepting manuscripts from researchers, surgeons, clinicians, and healthcare professionals worldwide, positioning itself as a new international forum for research at the intersection of surgery, imaging, engineering, and clinical medicine.

The journal will be led by Editor-in-Chief Dr. Kai-Uwe Lewandrowski of the Center for Advanced Spinal Surgery of Southern Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. His appointment places a specialist in advanced spinal procedures at the center of a publication intended to span multiple disciplines. Although endoscopy is often associated with gastrointestinal examinations, modern endoscopic surgery also includes highly specialized interventions in the spine, joints, nervous system, airway, head and neck, and pain-management settings.

At the core of the journal’s mission is the expansion of minimally invasive surgery, an approach that uses small access points, cameras, light sources, and precision instruments to reach and treat diseased tissue. Compared with conventional open procedures, endoscopic techniques can reduce disruption to surrounding structures, limit blood loss, shorten hospital stays, and support faster recovery in appropriately selected patients. Their success, however, depends on detailed anatomical visualization, advanced operator training, reliable instruments, and carefully designed clinical evidence.

Current Surgical Endoscopy is expected to publish original research, comprehensive reviews, mini-reviews, clinical guidelines, commentaries, and other scholarly contributions. This range of article types is intended to connect laboratory discoveries with practical surgical decision-making. Original studies may examine new procedures or patient outcomes, while reviews can assess how evidence is developing across rapidly changing fields. Guidelines and commentaries can help clinicians interpret emerging technologies and determine when a technique is ready for routine use.

The scope of the journal includes orthopedic, neurological, and spinal endoscopy, areas in which surgeons increasingly use narrow endoscopic corridors to access the spine or other complex anatomical regions. These procedures require real-time visualization of nerves, discs, bone, and soft tissue while minimizing damage to healthy structures. Research in this area may involve surgical access routes, navigation systems, complication prevention, rehabilitation, and comparative evaluations of endoscopic and traditional techniques.

Gastrointestinal endoscopy and gastroenterology will also form a major part of the journal’s scientific territory. In these specialties, flexible endoscopes can be used not only for diagnosis but also for tissue sampling, bleeding control, removal of lesions, drainage, and other therapeutic interventions. The journal will additionally cover endoscopic procedures in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery, where confined spaces and delicate anatomy make image quality, instrument design, and procedural precision particularly important.

Another important component will be the relationship between endoscopic surgery and enabling technologies. Biomedical imaging can provide surgeons with detailed maps of anatomy before and during an operation, while surgical navigation systems help align instruments with planned targets. Biomechanics offers a way to study how tissues, implants, and surgical corrections respond to movement and load. Together, these fields can improve procedural planning, support safer navigation, and contribute to more reproducible outcomes.

The publication will also address interventional pain management, clinical trials, evidence-based surgery, novel endoscopic procedures, and translational research. Translational work is particularly significant because it describes the process of moving an idea from experimental development into clinical practice. A new camera, robotic tool, imaging platform, or access technique may show promise in the laboratory, but its medical value must ultimately be tested through appropriate studies measuring safety, effectiveness, durability, patient quality of life, and cost.

By bringing these subjects together, the journal aims to reflect the multidisciplinary character of modern endoscopic care. Surgeons may increasingly work alongside gastroenterologists, radiologists, engineers, neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, and data scientists. Such collaboration is essential because technical innovation alone does not guarantee better treatment. New procedures must be evaluated within the context of patient selection, operator expertise, healthcare resources, long-term follow-up, and informed clinical choice.

Bentham Science Publishers says the journal will operate through rigorous peer review and draw on an internationally distinguished Editorial Board. Its stated objective is to advance scientific knowledge, encourage clinical excellence, and accelerate the translation of innovative research into improved patient care. Researchers and clinicians are now invited to submit their latest findings as Current Surgical Endoscopy begins building a scholarly record for one of the most rapidly developing areas of contemporary medicine.
