Toronto, ON — April 30, 2025 — Baycrest, a globally recognized leader in aging and brain health research, is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Lei Wang as the inaugural Vice-President of Scientific Affairs at the Baycrest Academy for Research and Education (BARE). Dr. Wang’s arrival represents a transformative step forward for Baycrest’s commitment to advancing neuroscience and dementia research through cutting-edge methodologies and international collaboration. His appointment is the culmination of an extensive global search to identify a visionary leader capable of joining and amplifying Baycrest’s scientific impact.
Dr. Wang will officially join Baycrest on August 19, 2025, transitioning from his esteemed role at The Ohio State University’s College of Medicine. At Ohio State, he holds a tenured professorship in both Psychiatry and Behavioural Health and Neuroscience departments. His interdisciplinary expertise uniquely positions him to navigate the complex interface between clinical neuroscience, neuroimaging technology, and computational analysis, disciplines central to Baycrest’s research strategy.
Renowned for pioneering novel applications of advanced neuroimaging techniques, Dr. Wang’s research delves deeply into the mechanisms underpinning brain aging and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. His work, characterized by the integration of sophisticated data-driven models with high-resolution imaging modalities, has yielded unprecedented insights into the early biomarkers predictive of cognitive decline. This fusion of big data analytics with neuroscience epitomizes the future of personalized medicine for the aging population.
The impact of Dr. Wang’s research extends beyond scientific discovery into the realm of open science and data transparency. He has played a pivotal leadership role in several National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded multi-center initiatives aimed at establishing rigorous standards for neuroimaging data sharing and harmonization. These initiatives have catalyzed the creation of robust frameworks for collaborative research, facilitating reproducible science and large-scale meta-analyses in neurodegeneration research.
Throughout his prolific career, Dr. Wang has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, cementing his reputation as a thought leader in computational neuroscience. His research has consistently attracted sustained funding from major agencies including the NIH and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Recognition of his scientific excellence is reflected in prestigious awards such as the Ken and Ruth Davee Award for Innovative Investigations in Affective Disorders and the IDP Foundation Research Innovation Challenge Award.
In addition to his research accolades, Dr. Wang holds fellowships with the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP). These honors acknowledge his outstanding contributions to both the development of engineering approaches in medicine and the pharmacological sciences as they pertain to brain disorders.
Within his new role at Baycrest, Dr. Wang will collaborate closely with Dr. Allison Sekuler, President and Chief Scientist of BARE, along with the broader executive team. His mandate is wide-ranging, encompassing the enhancement of Baycrest’s research infrastructure, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring that scientific endeavors align with Baycrest’s mission to “defy dementia and support healthy aging.” Strategic leadership will include overseeing the implementation and communication of BARE’s comprehensive research plan on regional, national, and international stages.
Dr. Wang’s educational background creates a solid foundation for his multidisciplinary approach to brain health research. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with Honors from the University of Maryland at College Park, an early indication of his technical proficiency. He later transitioned into biological sciences by completing a PhD in Engineering Sciences at Harvard University, reflecting his ability to merge engineering principles with complex biological systems. Further postdoctoral training in computational anatomy at Washington University in St. Louis sharpened his skills in brain morphometry and imaging analytics.
Prior to joining Ohio State, Dr. Wang was a tenured associate professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, teaching in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as well as Radiology. He maintains an adjunct professorship there, underscoring his continued involvement in multiple academic hubs that advance neurobiological research. This extensive network enhances his capacity to drive collaborative projects spanning diverse scientific disciplines and institutions.
Baycrest itself stands as a beacon of innovation in aging and brain health for nearly 110 years. As the home to the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI), as well as the Rotman Research Institute and the scientific headquarters for the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging, Baycrest integrates clinical care with pioneering research. The institution’s designation of Exemplary Status by Accreditation Canada underscores its commitment to superior care practices and safety outcomes.
With Dr. Wang’s appointment, Baycrest reaffirms its dedication to transformative science that leverages technological innovation, computational modeling, and open data principles to unravel the complexities of dementia and cognitive disorders. His leadership will catalyze the development of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets that hold promise for extending healthy cognition across the lifespan. As global demographics shift toward aging populations, these advancements are crucial not only for individuals affected by neurodegenerative diseases but also for healthcare systems worldwide.
Baycrest’s affiliation with the University of Toronto further enhances its research and training capabilities, positioning it as a hub for cultivating the next generation of leaders in brain health innovation. Through global partnerships and Baycrest Global Solutions, the institution translates scientific discoveries into practical applications, impacting senior living and healthcare internationally. Dr. Wang’s role as Vice-President of Scientific Affairs will thus be pivotal in expanding these partnerships and aligning scientific pursuits with emergent global health challenges in aging.
As the neuroscience community eagerly anticipates Dr. Wang’s contribution to Baycrest’s ecosystem, the strategic integration of his networks, innovative thinking, and technical expertise promises to accelerate the pace of discovery in understanding and ultimately combating dementia. The scientific agenda under his guidance will further exemplify how multidisciplinary research and collaboration can yield breakthroughs vital to brain health in aging societies.
