The JACC family of journals have published an eight-part series on chronological vs. biological aging  in relation to heart health. The series of State-of-the-Art Reviews plus introductory commentary are featured across nine journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), JACC: Basic to Translation Science, JACC: Heart Failure, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology, JACC: Asia, JACC: Advances, JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions and JACC: CardioOncology.

With a focus on cardiovascular disease (CVD), the series underscores the importance of understanding the distinction between chronological and biological aging and how biological factors influence CVD risk, progression and management, even when chronological years may not align. Clinical considerations that can affect the biological aging process and its impact on cardiovascular health are examined, including various biomarkers, genetic factors and lifestyle interventions, emphasizing the need and potential for tailored prevention and treatment strategies.

“There is much for caregivers and cardiovascular researchers to learn about how the linear passing of time from birth to old age, compared with how the accumulation of molecular and cellular changes result in a decline of cognitive and physiological function,” said JACC Editor-in-Chief Valentin Fuster, MD, MACC, in his introduction to the series.
