Springer Nature has launched Discover Fluid Mechanics, a new international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to research across all topics related to fluid mechanics. The announcement comes in the form of an inaugural editorial, published on 1 July 2025 as Volume 1, article number 1 of the journal, written by Francesco Romanò and Monalisa Ghosh. The editorial lays out the publication’s aims, scope and editorial structure, and invites researchers worldwide to submit their work.

According to the editorial, the journal supports multidisciplinary research and developments across fluid mechanics, with a special emphasis on fostering sustainable, equitable and innovative advancements in the field. The publishers frame the new outlet as a platform for cutting-edge research, dedicated to showcasing both discoveries and advancements that contribute to understanding fluid behaviour across a wide range of applications. By recognizing each contribution, the journal aims to support the continuous evolution of fluid mechanics as a discipline.

The editorial situates the launch within the breadth of the discipline itself. Fluid mechanics, the authors note, covers a wide range of natural phenomena and technological advancements, driving progress across science, engineering and industry. Its applications span aeronautics, chemical and mechanical engineering, hydraulics, materials science, meteorology, oceanography, geology, acoustics and combustion. The field has grown considerably with advances in computational and experimental techniques and through interdisciplinary integration with data science and machine learning. From optimising energy and heat transfer systems and enhancing biomedical devices to advancing aerospace and environmental engineering, the editorial argues that fluid mechanics plays an increasingly vital role in addressing complex real-world challenges.

The list of topics welcomed by the journal is broad. It includes biofluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, experimental fluid mechanics, flow through porous media, fluid–solid interactions, granular and suspension flows, heat and mass transfer, hydrodynamics, microfluidics, multiphase flows, Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, tribology and lubrication, and turbulence. The full list of topics within the journal’s scope is available on the journal’s aims-and-scope page, and the editorial indicates that the listed topics are not exhaustive.

Open access is central to the journal’s stated mission. The editorial states that, with open access to rigorously peer-reviewed, high-quality research, Discover Fluid Mechanics aims to ensure that scientific progress is readily accessible to researchers, engineers, educators, policymakers and the broader public worldwide. The journal says it will foster the exchange of knowledge, drive innovation, and support the responsible and impactful development of fluid mechanics research and its applications. The inaugural editorial itself is published open access, meaning readers can access the full text without a subscription.

The journal’s editorial board is described as composed of distinguished experts from diverse fields that align with the journal’s scope. Board members are expected to provide guidance on the journal’s direction, shape its focus and scope, suggest topical collections, take part in guest editing, and help maintain the journal’s relevance to current research trends. The editorial also notes that Discover Fluid Mechanics is actively recruiting new members to join the editorial board, with a call for editors published on the journal’s website.

Sustainability commitments feature prominently in the launch statement. The editorial declares a commitment to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, naming in particular Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; Climate Action; and Affordable and Clean Energy. This alignment is presented as part of the journal’s emphasis on sustainable and equitable advancement in fluid mechanics research.

Discover Fluid Mechanics welcomes a range of article types, including full-length research articles, brief communications, comprehensive reviews, perspectives and case studies. Detailed guidance on accepted article types, manuscript preparation, formatting, length and submission procedures is provided in the journal’s Submission Guidelines. In addition to regular submissions, the journal will publish guest-edited Topical Collections focused on specialised hot topics relevant to all aspects of fluid mechanics research, and topical collections currently accepting submissions are listed through the journal’s call-for-papers page.

Researchers in fluid mechanics and adjacent fields can now consult the journal’s aims and scope and submit manuscripts through its online portal. The editorial closes with an open invitation to the community to contribute to what the publishers describe as a platform intended to serve the field’s continued growth and its applications across science, engineering and industry.
