A new conceptual paper published in Discover Sustainability introduces "Family Business 5.0" (FB5.0), a framework designed to guide family firms through sustainable digital transformation by aligning the priorities of Industry 5.0 with the distinctive values that family businesses hold dear. The perspective article, authored by Andrew Birkbeck, Lisa Rowe and Bogdan Dumitrasconiu, argues that family enterprises may be better positioned than many realise to embrace the human-centric, sustainability-focused agenda of the emerging industrial era. The authors propose that family businesses, which often prioritise socioemotional wealth (SEW) over purely financial returns, naturally share these stakeholder-focused goals.

The conceptual model at the heart of the paper maps SEW's five FIBER dimensions onto Industry 5.0's pillars. By aligning these dimensions with human-centric, sustainable and resilient digitalisation, the framework positions FB5.0 as a guiding structure for ethically aligned, stakeholder-oriented technological change. The model produces what the authors call the "WARP" outputs: Worker wellbeing, Adaptive performance, Responsible technology adoption, and Planet and community impact.

These outputs describe how a family firm that anchors digital transformation in socioemotional wealth might expect benefits that extend beyond operational efficiency, encompassing employee welfare, organisational adaptability, ethical technology use and positive effects on communities and the environment. The paper draws on interdisciplinary literature and recent case evidence to synthesise perspectives from Industry 5.0 research, socioemotional wealth theory and family business management. It is presented as a conceptual contribution rather than an empirical test, offering theoretical insight and practical guidance for family business leaders seeking to future-proof their organisations while preserving their core identity.

Importantly, the authors acknowledge that family firms are not automatically suited to digital change. Risk aversion and a strong attachment to family legacy can act as barriers to innovation, potentially slowing technology adoption or steering it in conservative directions. The framework is intended to help leaders navigate this tension, showing how the same values that create resistance can also supply the motivation for responsible, people-powered transformation.

The originality of the contribution lies in its advocacy of a shift from technology-led change towards sustainability-oriented organisational evolution. Rather than treating digitalisation as an end in itself, FB5.0 frames emerging technologies as tools that can strengthen human capital, organisational resilience and socially responsible value creation. The authors argue this responds to a theoretical gap, since existing frameworks have not fully explained how socioemotional wealth shapes the mechanisms of digital transformation in family firms.

Because the work is a perspective article, its claims are conceptual propositions rather than measured outcomes. Nevertheless, the paper offers a structured explanatory model for researchers and practitioners alike, suggesting that the path to Industry 5.0 for family businesses may run through the very values that make them distinctive.
