The reliability of gridded precipitation products, which are extensively utilized globally to assess long-term changes in rainfall and snowfall, remains a significant area of uncertainty. Despite their widespread use in climate science, the precision of these products when tracking precipitation trends is often questionable, necessitating a rigorous evaluation of their inherent biases and variability.

This study evaluated nineteen quasi-global precipitation products, analyzing three distinct annual statistics: mean precipitation, daily maximum, and wet-day frequency. The researchers screened these datasets for temporal homogeneity and benchmarked the observed trends against established daily and monthly rain-gauge observations to quantify the discrepancy between modeled and observed reality.

A primary finding of the research revealed that most products exhibit spatially coherent discontinuities. These breaks in data consistency are often linked to changes within the observing systems themselves, specifically noting transitions from older to newer satellite instrumentation during the late 1990s and early 2000s, as well as shifts observed around 2014–2015.

The comparison against ground-based reference data highlighted substantial systematic errors; notably, only 58–64% of the non-gauge-corrected products matched the reference trend sign on average. This indicates that a significant portion of the observed trend signals in the products are artifacts of the data collection methodology rather than true climatic signals.

Even when incorporating gauge-corrected products into the analysis, the uncertainty remains high. The interquartile range of product trends was found to be 1.1 to 1.9 times the magnitude of the reference trends, suggesting that the variability introduced by the choice of product is substantial.

Focusing specifically on the 1983–2025 annual-mean trends over land, the eight long-record products analyzed spanned and extended beyond the envelope defined by climate model ensembles. This critical finding implies that current observational data cannot cleanly disentangle genuine climate model error from the inherent uncertainty present in the observational datasets themselves.

This profound uncertainty has wide-ranging implications for critical human activities. The lack of reliable trend data propagates into essential areas such as infrastructure design, agricultural risk management, and the allocation of climate finance across vulnerable regions.

The research underscores that this uncertainty is particularly acute in the tropics and within the Global South, where accurate precipitation data is vital for sustainable development and adaptation strategies.

Subject of Research: Evaluation of uncertainty in gridded precipitation products used to assess long-term rainfall changes.
