Peach variety diversification lifts Chinese farm incomes only up to a point

A survey of 924 peach farmers across four major Chinese fruit-growing provinces has found that growing more peach varieties raises operating income only up to an optimum, after which additional varieties begin to erode returns. The study, based on a 2022 farm survey in Jiangsu, Hubei, Anhui and Shandong and published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, links the behaviour of perennial-fruit growers to measurable market risks and quantifies where the payoff to diversification turns negative.

The researchers first asked what pushes farmers to spread their plantings across multiple varieties in the first place. Three pressures emerged as significant drivers: risk from purchasing nursery stock, dependence on particular sales channels, and difficulty hiring labour. Each of these constraints significantly increased the number of varieties a farmer cultivated, suggesting that diversification functions partly as a hedge against unreliable seedlings, volatile buyers and tight seasonal labour markets. Farmer age moderated the labour constraint effect in an inverted U pattern, meaning the influence of hiring difficulty on varietal choice rose and then fell across the age distribution. These results held across ordinary least squares and maximum likelihood estimations and remained robust after winsorisation of the data.

On income, the relationship was distinctly non-linear. Varietal diversification exhibited an inverted U-shaped association with operating income in the full sample, with the turning point lying within the observed range of variety counts and shifting upward as farm size increased. Larger operations could therefore carry more varieties before diversification stopped paying. Quantile regressions added a distributional dimension: the marginal income gain from adding varieties declined as farmers moved up the income distribution, so the least profitable growers had the most to gain from spreading risk across cultivars.

Market conditions shaped those payoffs directly. In high-risk market segments, the positive income effect of diversification weakened while the negative effect strengthened, indicating that diversification is not a uniform remedy when trading conditions deteriorate. Heterogeneity tests revealed a phenological pattern as well: a higher share of early-maturing peaches in a farmer’s portfolio dampened the benefits of adding varieties, whereas a higher share of late-maturing peaches enhanced them. Farmers specialising in flat peaches gained more from diversification than those focusing on honey peaches. The authors also note that planting locally leading cultivars allows farmers to hedge risks while capturing regional spillovers from neighbouring growers.

The findings clarify the behavioural logic of varietal diversification in a perennial fruit sector, and the authors argue that, because the income optimum shifts with farm size and market risk, the results can inform policies on seedling market governance, marketing infrastructure, labour services and regional varietal layout. As an observational survey study, the analysis identifies associations and estimated turning points rather than experimentally confirmed causal effects, and its scope is limited to peach production in four Chinese provinces during a single survey year.
