The roadDB R package provides streamlined programmatic access to the ROCEEH Out of Africa Database, a major repository of archaeological, paleoanthropological, paleoenvironmental, geographical and chronological information relevant to human evolution. The underlying ROAD dataset covers most of the last three million years across Africa and Eurasia. The package addresses a limited connection between the expanding R ecosystem and comprehensive archaeological and anthropological data.

R already offers tools for accessing paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions, as well as performing spatial and temporal analysis and modeling, but fewer options have provided direct programmatic access to broad archaeological repositories. roadDB links R users with ROAD through an open and transparent interface. ROAD contains site-level and assemblage-level information drawn from across its long temporal and geographic scope. Its contents bring together multiple categories of evidence used to investigate human evolution: archaeological observations, paleoanthropological records, paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions, geographical information and chronology. roadDB makes this collection accessible for large-scale quantitative analysis while supporting the integration of archaeological and paleoenvironmental evidence within broader spatial and temporal studies.

roadDB is a computational research tool rather than a new archaeological survey, excavation or empirical study of human movement. It does not establish a migration route, identify a corridor out of Africa or demonstrate a behavioral change; its function is to support analysis of evidence already held in ROAD. The authors describe ROAD as the only openly available archaeological dataset with this extent of temporal and geographic coverage, spanning Africa and Eurasia across most of the past three million years.

The package reflects the growing role of macroscale and interdisciplinary approaches in human-evolution research. By providing direct access to a richly curated collection of site and assemblage records alongside environmental, geographic and chronological information, roadDB supports transparent, interdisciplinary examination of the spatiotemporal dynamics of human evolution. Its contribution is therefore computational: it extends established data resources into a programmable environment for quantitative and interdisciplinary research.
