A study of 27 OECD countries from 1990 to 2020 found that financial development was associated with a higher ecological footprint, while digitalization and stricter environmental policies were associated with a lower footprint. The analysis also reported that both digitalization and environmental policy stringency moderated the relationship between financial development and the ecological footprint.

Researchers grounded the study in the STIRPAT theoretical framework and used Method of Moments Quantile Regression, designated MM-QR, to examine financial development, digitalization, environmental policy stringency, economic globalization, economic growth and urbanization across the distribution of the outcome. The reported results indicate that the positive association between financial development and ecological footprint was more pronounced at higher quantiles. By contrast, digitalization and environmental policy stringency were associated with lower ecological footprint values across the conditional distribution.

The reported interaction results indicated that both digitalization and environmental policy stringency significantly moderated the association between financial development and ecological footprint. Economic globalization was associated with a higher ecological footprint across all quantiles. Economic growth and urbanization were also positively associated with the outcome, which the authors interpreted as indicating greater ecological pressure in the model.

This is a quantile-regression analysis of country-level data rather than a review, protocol, simulation, or clinical or animal study. The findings are limited to the 27 OECD countries and 1990–2020 period examined and describe statistical associations rather than establishing that any factor caused changes in environmental conditions. Because the supplied material is an abstract from an early, accepted version that remains subject to further edits, the reported scope, methods and conclusions cannot be independently assessed against the full article here.
