For more than a decade, companies have been told that doing good is good business, yet the question of exactly how environmental, social and governance performance translates into financial results has remained stubbornly murky. A new review published in the journal Discover Sustainability by Darwis Abd Razak, Rosalan Ali and Noor Maimun Abdul Wahab of Putra Business School at Universiti Putra Malaysia argues that the confusion stems from treating the ESG-finance relationship as a single link, when it is in fact a chain of distinct economic mechanisms. Drawing on a curated dataset of 624 peer-reviewed articles from the Web of Science Core Collection spanning 2014 to 2026, the study reconstructs the intellectual map of the field and proposes a framework in which capital pricing and access to financing sit at the centre of the transmission from sustainability to profit.

The research team used a hybrid methodology that is increasingly common in fast-growing fields where the volume of literature has outpaced theoretical integration. A macroscopic bibliometric mapping exercise first charted the structure of the field, identifying clusters of research, influential publications and thematic evolution across the twelve-year window. The authors then narrowed their focus to a concentrated sub-sample of 45 core studies, subjecting these to in-depth qualitative content analysis to extract the underlying mechanisms and theoretical arguments. This two-stage design, the researchers explain, allows the field’s intellectual topography to be reconstructed without losing the fine-grained causal reasoning buried inside individual papers.

The central finding is what the authors call a chain-mediated paradigm. Rather than ESG performance directly boosting financial performance, the review finds that sustainability initiatives exert their influence through identifiable financial conduits. The most important of these are the cost of capital and access to financing. Firms with strong ESG profiles, the synthesis suggests, are perceived by lenders and investors as lower-risk, which lowers the price at which they can borrow and broadens the pool of capital available to them. Cheaper and more abundant financing then feeds through into investment capacity, operational flexibility and ultimately measurable financial outcomes such as profitability and firm value.

This mechanism-based view matters because it explains why so many empirical studies have produced conflicting results. If the financial payoff of ESG depends on the integrity of intermediate channels, then studies that measure only the endpoints, ESG scores on one side and accounting or market returns on the other, will capture a diluted and noisy signal. The review’s framework makes the intermediaries explicit, allowing researchers and practitioners to locate precisely where the transmission strengthens or breaks down, and to test each link of the chain separately rather than treating the whole relationship as a black box.

Perhaps the most distinctive contribution of the paper is its treatment of ESG-aligned Sukuk, the Islamic capital market instrument that has grown rapidly across Malaysia, Indonesia and the Gulf states. Sukuk are certificates that confer proportionate ownership in underlying assets rather than conventional debt claims, and ESG-aligned versions restrict the use of proceeds to projects with environmental or social benefits. The authors identify these instruments as a structurally distinct, dual-signalling mechanism for green value creation. In their framework, a Sukuk issuance simultaneously signals credible sustainability commitment to investors and signals Shariah compliance to a faith-sensitive investor base, allowing issuers to tap two sources of legitimacy at once and, in principle, to secure financing on more favourable terms than conventional instruments would permit.

The dual-signalling idea has practical weight. In markets where conventional green bonds and Islamic instruments coexist, an ESG-aligned Sukuk communicates both a green use of proceeds and adherence to Islamic financial principles, which can broaden demand and reduce information asymmetry between issuers and investors. For policymakers in Muslim-majority economies seeking to channel private capital into climate and social infrastructure, the finding suggests that aligning sustainability taxonomies with Islamic finance standards is not merely a matter of religious accommodation but a mechanism for expanding the effective investor base for green projects.

Yet the review is emphatic that none of these payoffs are automatic. The authors propose that the ultimate financial rewards of ESG are not universally supported but are strictly governed by exogenous institutional boundary conditions. Three such conditions feature prominently in their conceptual framework: investor preferences, institutional support and government guarantees. Where investors actively price sustainability attributes, where regulators and financial institutions provide supporting infrastructure such as disclosure standards and green taxonomies, and where governments underwrite or guarantee green instruments, the transmission channels from ESG to financial performance are strengthened. Where these conditions are absent, the same ESG investments may yield little or no measurable financial return.

This contingency argument reframes a long-running debate in corporate sustainability research. Rather than asking whether ESG pays, the framework implies the more productive question is under what institutional configurations ESG pays, and through which channels. A firm operating in a market with sophisticated ESG-conscious investors and robust regulatory support faces a fundamentally different cost-of-capital landscape than an identical firm in a market where sustainability information is neither demanded nor rewarded. The boundary conditions, in other words, are not statistical nuisances to be controlled for but the very architecture that determines whether the chain-mediated transmission operates at all.

The authors position the framework as a guide for two audiences. For corporate managers, the implication is that ESG strategy should be designed with capital-market mechanisms in mind: the goal is not sustainability performance in the abstract but the deliberate cultivation of the signals that lower capital costs and widen financing access. For macroeconomic policymakers, the review suggests that green finance policy should focus on building the institutional scaffolding, credible disclosure regimes, investor education and guarantee schemes, that allows the financial transmission of ESG to function, rather than relying on voluntary corporate virtue to deliver financial outcomes on its own.

As a review, the study synthesises rather than tests, and its conclusions rest on the quality and coverage of the underlying literature, which the authors acknowledge is theoretically fragmented and empirically contested. Nevertheless, by mapping the field’s structure, isolating the central financial conduits, elevating ESG-aligned Sukuk as a distinct instrument of green value creation and specifying the institutional conditions under which the whole system works, the paper offers one of the most complete accounts to date of how sustainability becomes profitability. The next step, the authors imply, is empirical: testing each link of the chain, and each boundary condition, in the markets where the future of sustainable finance is being written.
