As quantum computing transitions from an experimental laboratory discipline into a technology with genuine commercial and governmental applications, organizations across nearly every sector are confronting an uncomfortable question: when the era of quantum advantage arrives, will they be ready to use it? Florida Atlantic University quantum technology leader Robert Loredo believes most are not, and he has written a book to change that. Quantum Readiness for Leaders: Build Quantum Strategies, Teams, Security, and Ecosystems to Lead in the Era of Quantum Advantage, published by Packt Publishing, is aimed squarely at executives, chief technology officers, and organizational decision-makers who must plan for a future in which quantum processors, sensors, networks, and cryptographic tools reshape how complex problems are solved. Rather than walking readers through the mathematical formalism of qubits and entanglement, Loredo concentrates on the organizational machinery — strategy, talent, partnerships, security architecture, and investment discipline — that separates institutions that will benefit from quantum technologies from those that will watch the revolution happen to them.

Loredo’s timing is hardly accidental. In July he was named executive director of FAU’s Center for Quantum Technologies, where he is leading the university’s expanding efforts to weave together quantum research, education, workforce development, and industry collaboration. Florida Atlantic has deliberately positioned itself as Florida’s first quantum university, and it maintains a dedicated quantum computer on its Boca Raton campus — a resource that few institutions in the region can match. That combination of leadership responsibility and hands-on institutional experience shapes the book’s central argument: readiness is not a procurement decision or a training seminar, but a sustained organizational transformation. Loredo draws on twenty-five years of experience spanning IBM, academia, and enterprise innovation to translate a fast-moving and frequently overhyped field into concrete guidance that leaders can act on today, before the technology reaches full maturity.

The motivation for the book, Loredo explains, came from a question he heard repeatedly from organizations and executives trying to make sense of the quantum landscape. “I wrote Quantum Readiness for Leaders because after years of working with organizations and leaders around quantum technology, I kept hearing the same question: ‘What is quantum and where should I be investing?'” he said. His answer, developed throughout the book, is that the technology itself is advancing rapidly, but preparedness demands far more than understanding algorithms or buying access to a cloud-based quantum processor. It requires strategy, talent pipelines, security planning, partnerships, and — critically — a clear-eyed understanding of where quantum computing can create meaningful value rather than expensive experiments. His stated goal is to give leaders a practical roadmap they can use now, moving them from spectators of the quantum revolution to active participants in it.

Technically, the book casts a deliberately wide net. While quantum computing naturally anchors the discussion, Loredo examines the broader quantum technology stack, including quantum sensing, quantum networking, and quantum cryptography, and he devotes sustained attention to the convergence of quantum systems with artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. That convergence is increasingly viewed as one of the most consequential frontiers in computing: machine learning models may eventually benefit from quantum-accelerated optimization routines, while quantum key distribution and quantum random number generation promise new foundations for secure communication. The book also addresses quantum economics and investment logic, workforce development, organizational governance, prototyping and proof-of-concept development, data strategy, post-quantum cryptography, and the structure of the emerging quantum ecosystem itself — the startups, cloud providers, national programs, and standards bodies whose interactions will determine how quickly practical value materializes.

One of the most urgent threads in the book concerns security. Post-quantum cryptography — cryptographic algorithms designed to resist attacks by future quantum computers running Shor’s algorithm against today’s public-key systems — is no longer a speculative concern. Standards bodies have already finalized the first post-quantum algorithms, and organizations that hold sensitive data with long confidentiality lifetimes face a “harvest now, decrypt later” threat model in which encrypted traffic is being collected today for decryption once sufficiently powerful quantum machines exist. Loredo’s frameworks for preparing security architectures treat this migration as an organizational challenge as much as a technical one, involving inventory of cryptographic assets, vendor coordination, and phased deployment. “The need for quantum readiness is not simply about anticipating a future technological breakthrough,” Loredo said. “It’s about recognizing that organizations must begin developing the expertise, infrastructure and partnerships required to take advantage of quantum technologies as they mature.”

Structurally, the book offers leaders frameworks for evaluating quantum opportunities, building dedicated quantum teams, cultivating partnerships, and stress-testing security architectures for a world in which quantum computing could fundamentally change how the hardest computational problems are approached. Practical quantum advantage — the point at which a quantum system outperforms classical hardware on a commercially relevant task — remains an open milestone, but Loredo argues that the lead time required to be positioned for that moment is measured in years, not months. Organizations need time to identify use cases in optimization, simulation, materials discovery, logistics, and finance; to train or hire specialists who can formulate problems in quantum-native ways; and to establish the hybrid classical-quantum workflows through which early quantum value will almost certainly be delivered. Waiting until the breakthrough arrives, he suggests, means starting that institutional learning curve from zero against competitors who began years earlier.

The book’s release coincides with a period of deliberate institutional investment at Florida Atlantic. Gregg Fields, FAU’s vice president for research, framed the publication as part of a larger vision. “Robert’s new book provides an important roadmap for leaders who are trying to understand how to navigate the quantum era and translate this rapidly evolving technology into meaningful research and innovation,” Fields said. “That vision aligns closely with what we are building at Florida Atlantic. Through our Center for Quantum Technologies, our partnership with D-Wave Quantum, Inc. and direct access to quantum computing hardware, we are creating an environment where researchers can explore new applications, students can gain hands-on experience, and industry and academic partners can work together to advance the field.” The planned Advantage2 annealing quantum computing system at FAU will give researchers and students direct access to hardware that is already being applied to optimization problems in industry.

For the university, the combination of Loredo’s leadership, the new Center for Quantum Technologies, the planned annealing system, and industry partnerships represents a broader strategy to establish FAU as a national center for quantum education, research, and applied innovation. Notably, the university is positioning quantum computing not as a standalone technology initiative housed in a single department, but as an interdisciplinary research platform that connects computer science, engineering, the natural sciences, business, and other fields. That interdisciplinary framing mirrors the book’s own philosophy: quantum readiness, in Loredo’s telling, is as much about organizational design and human capital as it is about hardware and algorithms. Universities that treat quantum as a campus-wide capability, rather than a niche specialization, are better placed to supply the quantum-literate workforce that employers across aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, energy, and defense are beginning to demand.

Loredo’s message to leaders is blunt: quantum readiness cannot begin after the technology has arrived. “Quantum readiness is ultimately about people,” he said. “I wrote this book to help leaders understand how to plan — by building the right teams, developing partnerships and identifying where quantum can create meaningful value. The time to start preparing is now.” Quantum Readiness for Leaders, published in late August, is available from Packt Publishing in paperback and eBook formats, and it stands as a practical guide for business, technology, and organizational leaders navigating a technological shift whose ultimate scale remains uncertain but whose preparation costs only grow with delay. As quantum systems edge closer to commercial relevance, the organizations that invested early in strategy, security, talent, and ecosystems — the four pillars of Loredo’s roadmap — will be the ones positioned to convert quantum advantage into competitive advantage.

Subject of Research: Organizational quantum readiness, including strategy, workforce, cybersecurity, and ecosystem development for the emerging era of quantum advantage.
