A new Australian study is putting a striking proposition at the center of the urban health debate: contact with nature may help narrow the mental-health gap between people on different incomes. Published in npj Urban Sustainability, the research by Astell-Burt, Pritchard, Lin and colleagues presents evidence for what scientists call “equigenesis”—the possibility that a shared environmental resource can reduce, rather than reinforce, health inequalities. Parks and natural corridors can function as “third places”—settings outside home and work where people encounter neighbors, build social ties and develop a sense of belonging. These connections can buffer the effects of isolation and stress. However, the outcome depends heavily on design and governance. A green space that is poorly maintained, difficult to reach, exposed to crime or associated with displacement may not deliver the same benefits as a safe, connected and inclusive one. Greening can even intensify inequality if new investment raises rents and forces lower-income residents to leave. The research consequently speaks not only to planting trees, but to the question of who can access nature, under what conditions and for how long.

As with all observational evidence, the findings must be interpreted carefully. People who spend more time in nature may differ from those who do not in ways that are difficult to measure, including physical health, mobility, personal preferences, social support and perceptions of neighborhood safety. Healthier residents may also be more likely to visit parks, creating the possibility of reverse causation. Researchers can address some of these challenges by adjusting for demographic and neighborhood characteristics, using longitudinal data, comparing changes over time or applying statistical models designed to test interactions between income and environmental exposure. The key statistical signal for equigenesis is an interaction: the association between nature contact and mental health must vary according to socioeconomic position in a way that reduces the gap between groups. Such a pattern is more informative than a simple claim that greener areas are healthier.
The implications extend beyond Australia. If nature contact can help level income-related differences in mental health, urban greening could become part of a broader prevention strategy alongside affordable housing, secure employment, accessible healthcare and community services. The most effective policies would likely prioritize neighborhoods with the greatest combination of economic disadvantage, environmental deprivation and mental-health burden. They would also treat nature as a basic civic resource rather than a luxury feature added to already prosperous developments. The study does not suggest that parks can substitute for action on poverty or unequal access to care. Instead, it points to an underused lever: shaping everyday environments so that the benefits of urban nature reach the people most exposed to the stresses of inequality. In a period when cities are searching for scalable ways to protect mental health, the most powerful intervention may sometimes begin with something as ordinary—and as politically consequential—as who gets a tree, a path or a patch of living landscape nearby.
