A quiet rebellion against the smartphone may be taking shape in homes, workplaces, schools and social venues, where people are experimenting with ways to make their devices less accessible. From wall-mounted docking stations that resemble old telephone shelves to coiled handsets that transform a smartphone into a landline, retro phone accessories are becoming part of a wider cultural response to the “always-on” technology habits that have defined daily life for more than two decades. Research from Edith Cowan University suggests that the appeal of these products may extend beyond nostalgia: they can create physical and psychological distance from devices designed to remain constantly within reach.

The study, led by communication and culture researcher Dr Jess Hardley, examines how smartphones have become embedded in ordinary routines and why some users are now deliberately interrupting that relationship. Smartphones are not simply communication tools. They function simultaneously as cameras, calendars, entertainment systems, payment devices, navigation aids, news feeds and social environments. Because one object performs so many roles, people often carry it from room to room without consciously deciding to do so. Its presence becomes automatic, while checking it can become a low-effort response to boredom, uncertainty or an unoccupied moment.

“Smartphones were designed to be with us all the time,” Dr Hardley said. “We carry them from room to room, keep them within reach and don’t think twice about holding or checking them.” That constant proximity matters because physical accessibility reduces the effort required to begin an interaction. A phone resting beside a person can be picked up in seconds, allowing notifications, social media feeds, games and messages to compete continuously for attention. By contrast, placing the device in another room introduces a small physical barrier, and even a minor delay can interrupt an automatic behavior before it becomes a prolonged session.

Drawing on more than a decade of research with Australian smartphone users, Hardley found that people are not merely expressing a vague wish to spend less time online. Many are changing the physical conditions under which phone use occurs. One participant described locking her phone in a work drawer after mobile gaming became “obsessive” and began affecting her concentration. Other users reported placing devices in different rooms, keeping them out of reach or using settings that made them less visually stimulating. These actions transform self-control from a purely mental task into an environmental design problem: instead of repeatedly resisting a nearby temptation, users alter the surroundings that trigger the behavior.

This approach is consistent with a principle widely examined in behavioral science: habits are often shaped by cues, friction and immediate rewards. A notification, a vibration or the simple sight of a familiar screen can serve as a cue to check the device. Once the phone is unlocked, rapidly delivered information and entertainment provide immediate reinforcement, encouraging repeated interactions. Increasing “friction”—for example, by locking the device away, removing color or requiring an extra step before access—may weaken the link between the cue and the habitual response. The research does not present these strategies as a universal treatment for problematic smartphone use, but it shows how ordinary users are developing practical methods to regain control over when and where they engage with their devices.

The same impulse can be seen in the growing popularity of phone-free events, application restrictions, grayscale displays and phone-locking pouches used at concerts. At phone-free events, attendees may be asked to seal their devices in special cases that remain in their possession but cannot be opened until they leave the venue. This arrangement preserves access in an emergency while removing the routine possibility of filming, messaging or scrolling during the event. Grayscale settings similarly reduce the visual intensity of app icons, photographs and video thumbnails. Because color is an important part of many digital interfaces, removing it can make the screen less immediately rewarding, although it does not eliminate the underlying applications or the user’s ability to access them.

Retro accessories offer a particularly visible version of this distancing strategy. A wall-mounted dock can establish a designated location where a phone remains when it is not needed, rather than allowing it to travel continuously through the home. A coiled-cord handset can make a smartphone feel more like a traditional telephone, encouraging users to stand in one place during calls and reducing the temptation to browse while speaking. These products may be marketed through playful design and vintage aesthetics, but their practical effect is to change the physical relationship between the user and the screen. The phone remains connected, yet it is no longer as effortless to hold, carry and manipulate.

“At first glance these products can seem playful or nostalgic,” Hardley said. “But they also point to something more significant. People appear to be looking for practical ways to interrupt the constant habit of picking up and interacting with their phones.” This distinction is important because the accessories do not necessarily reject technology. Most users still want smartphones for navigation, work, safety, communication and access to essential services. Instead, they are attempting to separate those functions from the continuous stream of optional interactions that can fill every pause in the day. The emerging goal is not complete disconnection, but selective availability.

The findings arrive as governments, schools and cultural institutions debate how access to connected devices should be managed, particularly for children and adolescents. Australian states are enforcing school phone bans, while international discussions continue over social media, attention, sleep and young people’s mental health. Hardley describes personal experiments and institutional rules as parallel responses to the same problem: how to define appropriate boundaries around technologies built to maximize availability. “Individuals are finding their own ways to step back from smartphones, while schools and other institutions are introducing rules that limit access during parts of the day,” they said.

Hardley argues that the rise of phone-free events, phone-locking systems and landline-inspired accessories may signal a broader change in public attitudes toward the smartphone. For years, constant connectivity was commonly presented as an unquestionable benefit, allowing people to respond immediately and remain informed wherever they were. The new distancing practices suggest that convenience alone is no longer the only measure by which people judge digital technology. Users are beginning to ask whether every moment should be reachable, whether every delay should be filled and whether a device intended to connect them to the world should also be allowed to dominate their physical surroundings. “We’re still living in a world shaped by smartphones,” Hardley said, “but we’re also seeing the beginnings of a new conversation about when, where and how we want them to be part of our lives.”
