Chicago—A new survey of parents, teachers, school administrators, and education officials has found broad agreement that data literacy should become a core part of K–12 education, as artificial intelligence rapidly changes how students learn, work, and make decisions. The study, conducted by Data Science 4 Everyone and Mathematica, suggests that families and educators increasingly view the ability to interpret, question, and communicate with data as a basic life skill rather than a specialty reserved for mathematicians or computer scientists.

The survey included 1,333 respondents from across the education system, including parents, classroom teachers, school leaders, and state and local education agency staff. Data were collected between February and March 2026. According to the findings, 88 percent of participants believe every student should be data literate before graduating from high school. That level of agreement reflects growing concern that young people will encounter data-driven claims throughout nearly every part of modern life, from health and finance to elections, employment, and online media.

Data literacy extends beyond the ability to calculate averages or create charts. It includes understanding where data come from, recognizing how a sample was collected, distinguishing correlation from causation, assessing uncertainty, and identifying misleading or incomplete presentations. These skills are particularly important in an era when automated systems can generate convincing text, images, statistics, and recommendations at extraordinary speed. Without a foundation in data reasoning, students may struggle to determine whether information is reliable, biased, or improperly interpreted.

The survey found that 84 percent of respondents want data literacy and data science to be integrated across several academic subjects rather than confined to mathematics or computer science classes. In history, students might examine demographic records or election data to evaluate competing interpretations of the past. In science, they might analyze experimental results and estimate uncertainty. In English, they could investigate how statistics are used rhetorically in news reports, advertisements, and political arguments. Such an approach treats data as a language of evidence that operates across disciplines.

Artificial intelligence appears to be accelerating this demand. Seventy-six percent of respondents said AI has made data education more important than ever. Modern AI systems are trained on enormous collections of data and use statistical models to identify patterns and generate likely outputs. However, these systems do not automatically distinguish truth from falsehood. They can reproduce errors in their training data, amplify social biases, invent sources, or present uncertain conclusions with unwarranted confidence. Students therefore need enough statistical and scientific understanding to evaluate AI-generated claims rather than accepting them at face value.

When asked which capabilities matter most for becoming “AI-ready,” parents and educators placed problem-solving and critical thinking above highly technical skills. Strong foundations in mathematics, science, and English were also prioritized over computer programming or the ability to write sophisticated prompts for AI tools. The result challenges the idea that AI preparation should focus primarily on teaching students how to operate specific software. Because tools and interfaces change quickly, durable reasoning skills may provide greater protection against technological obsolescence.

Problem-solving allows students to define a question before searching for an answer, while critical thinking helps them test whether a proposed answer is supported by evidence. Mathematical knowledge can help them interpret rates, proportions, probabilities, and statistical comparisons. Scientific literacy provides a framework for evaluating hypotheses and distinguishing repeatable evidence from anecdotal claims. Communication skills are equally important because data must be explained clearly, including its limitations, assumptions, and potential consequences.

The findings also point to a significant gap between the importance respondents assign to data literacy and the opportunities they believe students currently have to develop it. Schools may lack age-appropriate curricula, reliable instructional materials, assessment tools, or teachers who have received specialized professional development. Integrating data science across the curriculum can also be difficult when educators are already facing crowded schedules and pressure to meet existing academic standards. Closing the gap will require sustained investment rather than isolated lessons or short-term technology programs.

The organizations behind the survey argue that data literacy should also be connected to civic participation. Citizens routinely encounter statistics about public health, climate, crime, education, and the economy, often in highly simplified or politically charged forms. Understanding margins of error, changing definitions, data omissions, and the difference between individual experience and population-level evidence can help people participate more effectively in democratic decision-making. In this view, data education is not only preparation for employment; it is preparation for responsible citizenship.

“These survey results make it clear that parents and educators are hyper-aware of the need to ensure every student has the opportunity to develop data literacy skills before entering the real world,” said Zarek Drozda, director of Data Science 4 Everyone. He said students need durable skills that enable them to use AI thoughtfully, evaluate machine-generated information critically, and make informed decisions in personal and professional settings. Kara Conroy, a senior researcher at Mathematica, said the difference between the perceived importance of data literacy and the opportunities available in schools underscores the need for investment in curriculum, instructional resources, and professional learning.
