The University of Central Florida has opened a new aerospace medicine clinic near Orlando International Airport, creating a specialized medical hub for pilots seeking certification from the Federal Aviation Administration. Located at UCF Health Faculty Physician Practice in Lake Nona, the clinic is designed to evaluate whether aviators can safely perform their duties and to help them address medical issues that could delay or prevent clearance to fly.
The UCF Aerospace Medicine Clinic is led by William “Ed” Powers, chief medical officer of UCF’s Center for Aerospace and Extreme Environments Medicine and a certified aviation medical examiner authorized to conduct the highest level of FAA aviation medical examinations. Depending on the aircraft they operate and the responsibilities they hold, civilian pilots must obtain different classes of medical certificates. Commercial pilots may be required to undergo examinations every six months or annually, while other aviators face different schedules and medical standards.
Unlike a conventional primary-care appointment, an FAA aviation medical examination is fundamentally a risk assessment. Physicians are not simply searching for disease; they are determining whether a condition could cause sudden incapacitation during flight. A loss of consciousness, severe cardiac event, neurological episode or abrupt impairment of vision could endanger the pilot, crew, passengers and people on the ground. The medical certification system therefore focuses on the probability of such events occurring during aviation operations and on whether that risk can be reduced to an acceptable level.
The examination includes a physical assessment, a review of the pilot’s medical history and targeted tests of hearing and vision. Pilots must demonstrate adequate visual function and show that they can distinguish colors required for aviation signals and instruments. Airline pilots undergo regular electrocardiograms, while recreational and other pilots may receive cardiac testing when their history or examination suggests possible heart disease. Conditions such as hypertension may not permanently disqualify a pilot, but certification can be delayed until blood pressure is treated, stable and properly controlled.
This distinction between diagnosis and flight safety is central to aerospace medicine. A manageable condition may have little effect on everyday life yet become significant in an aircraft, where a pilot cannot simply stop and wait for assistance. In-flight workload, altitude, fatigue, stress and limited access to emergency care can amplify the consequences of a sudden medical problem. The FAA’s standards are intended to minimize the likelihood that a pilot will become unable to control an aircraft at a critical moment, particularly when responsible for a large number of passengers.
The new clinic’s main advantage is its connection to UCF’s College of Medicine physician network. When an examination reveals a complex cardiovascular, neurological, psychiatric or other medical concern, pilots may need specialist evaluations, additional testing or documentation for FAA review. At UCF, those services can be coordinated across multiple specialties within the same academic health system. The goal is to reduce administrative errors and unnecessary delays while giving pilots a clear path toward treatment, review and, when appropriate, renewed medical certification.
Powers brings extensive experience in both government and commercial spaceflight medicine. Before joining UCF, he served as chief of NASA’s Medical Operations Branch, directed flight medicine for Axiom Space and led an aerospace medicine residency program at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He also worked as a supervisory medical officer within the FAA. That background gives him an understanding of how medical findings are interpreted by regulators and what documentation is needed when a case requires additional review.
The clinic is positioned to serve a broad aviation community. It lies approximately 10 miles from Orlando International Airport, which handles about 58 million travelers each year, and is surrounded by flight schools, general aviation operators and satellite airports including Kissimmee Gateway Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport. Students training for aviation careers may need early guidance on certification, while experienced pilots may require help returning to flight after illness, surgery or a change in their health status. By providing another regional access point, the clinic could help keep pilots in the certification system and support Central Florida’s expanding aviation economy.
UCF officials describe the clinic as an initial clinical component of a larger aerospace medicine program spanning education, research, patient care and operational support. The university intends to connect medicine with engineering, human-performance science and the commercial aerospace industry as aviation moves toward increasingly complex aircraft and spaceflight missions. Emmanuel Urquieta, vice chair for aerospace medicine at the UCF College of Medicine, says the long-term objective is to build medical infrastructure for student pilots, flight schools, commercial aviation, spaceflight providers and future human exploration beyond Earth.
The clinic began with limited Thursday and Friday morning appointments while its team refines procedures before expanding availability. Camila Niebla, a UCF health sciences graduate and the clinic’s aerospace medicine navigator, is helping coordinate operations and guide patients through the certification process. The clinic’s opening reflects a growing recognition that the future of flight depends not only on aircraft design and pilot training, but also on precise methods for monitoring human health under demanding conditions.
