Korea University Guro Hospital has officially launched clinical operations of Esprit, the most advanced Gamma Knife system engineered for treating brain tumors and cerebrovascular diseases. This state-of-the-art platform signifies a breakthrough in radiosurgery, integrating the strengths of its predecessors, Perfexion and ICON, to deliver unparalleled precision and patient comfort.

Esprit ushers in a frame-free approach to Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Traditional procedures required invasive fixation, attaching a rigid frame to the patient’s skull via screws to ensure millimetric targeting accuracy. Esprit replaces this with a custom-fitted thermoplastic mask that immobilizes the patient comfortably without pain. This innovation is complemented by a highly sensitive real-time infrared motion management system capable of detecting movements with submillimeter accuracy of up to 0.15 mm. The system’s enhanced precision is matched by its smart treatment planning software, Lightning, which employs artificial intelligence to revolutionize workflow. Where treatment plans previously demanded extensive manual optimization by clinicians, Lightning automates this process, accelerating planning time by over 80%. This automation also enables faster radiation delivery—with reductions of up to 50% in treatment duration. Faster, more efficient treatments not only decrease patient waiting times but also protect vital adjacent structures such as the optic and auditory nerves, known for their radiation sensitivity. Consequently, the Esprit system enables safer and more exact radiosurgical interventions.

With this technological leap, Korea University Guro Hospital strengthens its commitment to advancing patient-centered care. President Byung Wook Min emphasized that the installation of Esprit demonstrates the institution’s dedication to adopting innovations that improve outcomes for patients with complex brain disorders. The hospital aims to continue expanding access to cutting-edge medical infrastructure that elevates both the quality and experience of neurosurgical treatment.
