The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology—Hans Knöll Institute (Leibniz-HKI)—has once again been honored with the prestigious TOTAL E-QUALITY award, a distinction that recognizes outstanding commitment to equitable, inclusive, and sustainable organizational cultures within scientific institutions. This accolade, valid for the years 2025 to 2027, underscores Leibniz-HKI’s enduring dedication to embedding gender equality and sustainability into the core fabric of its research environment, demonstrating measurable progress across multiple dimensions of diversity and inclusion.

Receiving the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for the fifth time, Leibniz-HKI reaffirmed its position as a leader in progressive equality practices in scientific research. Equally notable was the simultaneous conferment of the Sustainability Award, amplifying the acknowledgment of the institute’s integrated approach where sustainable practices are entwined with its equality strategies. Christine Vogler, the institute’s Equal Opportunities Officer, emphasized that the accolades are not merely symbolic but signal the impactful and ongoing nature of their diversity initiatives, which are intrinsic to the institution’s identity and strategic vision moving forward.

The annual TOTAL E-QUALITY award, administered by the non-profit association TOTAL E-QUALITY Deutschland e.V., rigorously evaluates institutions on comprehensive criteria spanning fair employment policies, organizational culture, and strategic inclusivity goals. The jury’s commendation highlighted Leibniz-HKI’s exemplary personnel policies and organizational structures that holistically address gender equality, resulting in an environment where equal opportunities are systematically institutionalized rather than episodic endeavors.

Central to Leibniz-HKI’s success are targeted programs such as the “Female Empowerment@Leibniz-HKI” workshop series. This initiative is specifically designed to bolster the career trajectories of postdoctoral women scientists through thematic workshops addressing complex issues like cognitive load management and conflict resolution—areas often underrepresented in traditional professional development programs. Complementing these interventions are personalized career counseling sessions and network-building meetings that foster peer support and mentorship, crucial elements underpinning the retention and advancement of women researchers.

Parallel to these career development efforts, the institute has innovatively embraced the integration of gender and diversity discourse into its broader scientific culture through initiatives like the “Science meets Society” book club. Curated in collaboration with the interdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence “Balance of the Microverse,” this forum invites researchers to engage critically with seminal works on gender equality, diversity, and systemic discrimination in the sciences. Such spaces cultivate reflective organizational culture changes by encouraging scientists to interrogate implicit biases and socio-political dimensions of their work, thus reinforcing Leibniz-HKI’s commitment to a socially conscious research ethos.

Leibniz-HKI’s outreach extends beyond its internal community, actively promoting science education and career pathways for girls and young women in STEM fields. By facilitating participation in events such as Girls’ Day (Forsche Schüler-Tag) and amplifying the visibility of female scientists through biographical features, public engagements, and targeted social media campaigns, the institute strategically addresses gender imbalances at the societal level, contributing to a more diverse next generation of researchers and scientific leaders.

The demographics at Leibniz-HKI reflect the institute’s commitment to inclusivity, with a workforce of approximately 450 employees, more than half of whom are women. Notably, the institute achieves gender parity in scientific positions across all levels, including senior leadership roles – a testament to the effectiveness of its comprehensive equality policies. In administrative and technical sectors, women constitute an even larger proportion, approximately 64%, further illustrating a substantial institutional commitment to equitable representation.

Sustainability efforts are deeply embedded alongside equality initiatives at Leibniz-HKI, as recognized by the Sustainability Award. This dual acknowledgment reaffirms that fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce cannot be dissociated from broader environmental and social sustainability goals. The institute’s strategy integrates sustainable development principles across its operational and research activities, ensuring that equality frameworks also advance ecological and economic longevity.

The TOTAL E-QUALITY award ceremony, themed “HERE TO STAY,” underscored the critical importance of creating diversity-friendly onboarding processes and employee retention strategies. These factors are essential for maintaining inclusive organizational cultures that not only recruit but also nurture and sustain diverse talent pools in the long term. Nationwide, 61 organizations from sectors including business, science, and administration were honored, with several Leibniz Association institutes receiving recognition, reflecting a broad cultural shift across Germany’s scientific landscape.

The alignment of Leibniz-HKI’s equality and sustainability policies with external evaluations, including assessments from the Leibniz Association, ensures that its goals and actions are transparent and accountable. Regular reviews facilitate continuous improvement and adaptation of policies to address emerging challenges within the research environment, thus maintaining institutional responsiveness and leadership in equity advancement.

Beyond policy and programmatic achievements, Leibniz-HKI’s approach exemplifies how research organizations can operationalize intersectional frameworks that consider various axes of identity, including gender, nationality, and professional rank. With a substantial proportion of international staff—one-third of employees hail from abroad—the institute fosters an intercultural work environment that supports global collaboration while prioritizing equity and inclusion.

In summary, the repeated recognition of Leibniz-HKI by TOTAL E-QUALITY and the conferment of the Sustainability Award not only celebrate past achievements but also set a benchmark for integrating equality and sustainability within cutting-edge scientific research institutions. The institute’s model illustrates how deliberate, structured, and multidimensional approaches to workforce diversity, equitable career development, and sustainable practices can create vibrant, innovative, and socially responsible research ecosystems poised to address complex scientific challenges in an inclusive manner.
