WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2026 — The playful, exaggerated “baby talk” known in Korean as aegyo may do more than make adults sound cute. New research suggests that when Korean speakers perform aegyo, they systematically alter the acoustics of their voices in a way that makes them sound younger and physically smaller. The finding offers a scientific explanation for a vocal style widely heard in K-pop performances, Korean television dramas and everyday social interactions, where adults use exaggerated expressions, gestures and speech to appear more endearing.

Aegyo is commonly associated with flirtation, affection and social bonding. K-pop idols may be asked by fans to perform it onstage, sometimes competing to see who can deliver the most charming version. In Korean dramas, characters may adopt aegyo speech during romantic or emotionally intimate scenes. Although listeners readily recognize the style, the acoustic features that create its impression of cuteness have received far less scientific attention than the social behavior itself. Researchers Ji-eun Kim of Duksung Women’s University in South Korea and Volker Dellwo of the University of Zurich set out to identify measurable changes in the voice that accompany aegyo.

Their study focused on the first formant, or F1, of vowel sounds. Formants are concentrations of acoustic energy that appear in the speech signal as the vocal tract filters the sound produced by the vocal folds. Because the shape and size of the throat, mouth and oral cavity influence these resonances, formant frequencies provide clues about how a speaker is positioning the tongue, lips and jaw. F1 is particularly important because it is closely related to vowel height: vowels produced with the tongue positioned higher in the mouth generally have lower F1 values, while vowels made with a lower tongue position tend to have higher F1 values.

F1 is also influenced by the effective length of the vocal tract. A shorter vocal tract produces higher resonant frequencies, much as a shorter musical instrument tends to generate higher resonances than a longer one. Children generally have shorter vocal tracts than adults, which is one reason their voices contain higher formant frequencies and often sound smaller or younger. “A shorter vocal tract naturally produces higher resonances, and therefore higher formant frequencies, than a longer one,” Kim said. “This is one of the main reasons why children’s voices sound so different from those of adults.”

To test whether aegyo exploits this acoustic association, the researchers asked male and female speakers between 25 and 31 years old to read sentences in two speaking styles: ordinary speech and speech produced with aegyo. The team then compared the vowel formants in the recordings. Across the speakers, aegyo was associated with increased formant frequencies, including a systematic rise in F1. The result indicates that the speakers were not merely changing their emotional tone or speaking with greater enthusiasm. They were also modifying the acoustic configuration of their vocal tracts in a way that suggested a shorter resonating space.

The study does not show that adults physically shorten their throats during aegyo. Instead, the speakers appear to adjust the positions and movements of the articulators involved in speech, including the tongue, jaw and lips, creating an acoustic impression associated with a smaller vocal tract. The change may operate alongside other features of aegyo, such as heightened pitch, exaggerated intonation, softer delivery and playful pronunciation. By raising formant frequencies, speakers may be reproducing one of the auditory qualities that listeners commonly associate with children’s voices.

The finding fits into a broader scientific understanding of how animals use vocal anatomy to influence the way others perceive them. In many species, lowering the larynx lengthens the apparent vocal tract and can make an animal sound larger and more formidable than it really is. “In the animal kingdom, several species lower their larynx to create the impression of a longer vocal tract and, therefore, a larger body size, making themselves appear more formidable than they really are,” Dellwo said. “Our findings suggest that humans can use the opposite strategy: Rather than sounding larger, speakers of aegyo make themselves sound smaller and younger.”

That apparent shift in vocal size could help explain why aegyo is socially effective. A childlike voice may trigger impressions of vulnerability, harmlessness or approachability, potentially encouraging a protective response from listeners. It may also soften interactions and reinforce feelings of closeness between romantic partners, friends or performers and fans. The acoustic signal could be especially powerful because it works rapidly and often outside conscious awareness: listeners do not need to analyze a speaker’s formant frequencies to respond to the impression of youthfulness created by the voice.

Kim and Dellwo are now interested in determining how speakers produce the effect in greater detail. Future work could examine the precise movements of the tongue, jaw and lips, as well as changes in laryngeal position, vocal-tract shaping, pitch and voice quality. The researchers also want to investigate why people use aegyo in different social settings and whether listeners from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds interpret the acoustic changes in the same way. Another possibility is that the distinctive sound helps people become more memorable. “If this is the case, sounding cute may not only make someone appear more approachable, but could also help establish a person’s identity in the minds of others,” Dellwo said.

The research, titled “Systematic F1 increase in Korean aegyo speech may signal childlike qualities,” will appear in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America on Aug. 18, 2026. By identifying a consistent acoustic signature in a culturally prominent speech style, the study connects the science of speech production with questions about attraction, identity and social bonding. It also suggests that the human voice can manipulate perceived body size in two directions: lower resonances can imply a larger speaker, while the elevated formant frequencies of aegyo may make an adult sound younger, smaller and more irresistibly cute.
