George Mason University Receives Major Grant for Transformative Cybersecurity Scholarship Program

In the realm of national security and public safety, the urgency for well-prepared cybersecurity professionals is more palpable today than ever before. As cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity and scope, educational institutions are increasingly called upon to cultivate the next generation of cybersecurity experts. George Mason University has taken a significant step in this direction under the leadership of Kun Sun, a distinguished Professor in Information Sciences and Technology at the Center for Secure Information Systems within the College of Engineering and Computing. The university has secured funding for the "CyberCorps Scholarship for Service: EAGLE" initiative, aimed at enhancing American government leadership in cybersecurity through robust educational support.

To combat the rising tide of cyber-attacks, the project is designed to nurture a diverse cohort of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students who are equipped to understand and tackle today’s intricate cyber challenges. The EAGLE Scholarship for Service (SFS) program represents a crucial investment into a new generation of cybersecurity engineers. This initiative is not just about education; it is about laying the groundwork for innovation through a multi-faceted approach that interweaves advanced training, professional development, and real-world research experiences.

The SFS program will operate over a five-year timeline, implemented through a methodical and iterative framework. This approach ensures the program remains student-centered and sustainable, focusing on foundational components such as recruitment, education, research, retention, and program evaluation. The emphasis is not solely on classroom learning; rather, it extends into hands-on experiences that prepare students for dynamic careers in cybersecurity.

An exciting aspect of the EAGLE SFS program is its commitment to integrating research across disciplines. Funding for this ambitious endeavor comes from the National Science Foundation’s CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, which is aligned with the U.S. National Cyber Strategy aimed at bolstering the cybersecurity workforce. The total award amount of $3,952,971, which begins in January 2025 and extends through to late December 2029, underscores the significance and potential impact of the initiative.

Upon completion of their respective academic programs, recipients of the CyberCorps scholarship are obligated to fulfill a service requirement, working in a cybersecurity role for a government organization for a duration equivalent to the scholarship support received. This commitment not only reinforces the ethical responsibility of these graduates but also serves to directly contribute to the enhancement of national security infrastructure.

The overarching aim of the EAGLE program is to cultivate a generation of leaders in cybersecurity who are not only technically proficient but also equipped with the leadership skills necessary to navigate the complexities of public safety and national defense.
