Springer Nature has announced the recipients of its 2026 Editor of Distinction Awards, an annual programme that recognises the often invisible labour performed by academic editors across the publishing giant’s vast journal portfolio. Among the journals celebrating honourees this year is BMC Geriatrics, an open-access venue dedicated to research on ageing and the health of older adults, which counts a substantial number of its editorial board members among this year’s awardees. The awards are structured around two principal categories, the Springer Nature Editorial Contribution Award and the Springer Nature Author Service Award, each of which highlights a different facet of the editorial work that underpins the scientific record.

The Editorial Contribution Award is presented for meticulous assessment of submissions and rigorous management of the peer review process, activities that the publisher describes as safeguarding the scientific accuracy of the published record. In practical terms, this means that honoured editors are those who evaluate manuscripts with care, select and coordinate qualified peer reviewers, and ensure that the technical scrutiny applied to each paper is proportionate to the claims it makes. At a time when journals worldwide face surging submission volumes and growing concerns about research integrity, the quality of editorial judgement at the manuscript level has become a topic of intense discussion across the scientific community.

The recipients of the Editorial Contribution Award recognised through BMC Geriatrics represent an international cohort spanning geriatrics, gerontology, rehabilitation science, epidemiology and allied health research. The list includes A R M Saifuddin Ekram, Agnieszka Wiśniowska-Szurlej, Antoine Christiaens, Bart Spaetgens, Chang Dae Lee, Chen Pao-Huan, Ellen Freiberger, Esma Nur Kolbasi Dogan, Francesco Curcio, Gu Eon Kang, Guogui Huang, Hui-Chuan Hsu, Javier Jerez-Roig, Jonathan K. L. Mak, Kazuhiro Miyata, Koen Milisen, Krystal Warmoth, Padmore Adusei Amoah, Qingsong Chang, Seyedeh Saleheh Mortazavi, Shanshan Shen, Shirin Vellani, Silvia Giovannini, Stefano Cacciatore, Takashi Mori, Tino Prell, Tsuyoshi Harada, Xue-Qiang Wang, Yang Zhao and Zeynep Şahiner. The breadth of geographic and disciplinary representation reflected in this roster mirrors the global character of ageing research itself, a field in which demographic pressures are transforming health systems on every continent.

The second category, the Springer Nature Author Service Award, recognises exceptional service in improving the author experience and ensuring that the peer review process is efficient, constructive and fair. This dimension of editorial work is frequently undervalued in public discussions of publishing, which tend to focus on dramatic cases of misconduct or retractions rather than the routine mechanics of manuscript handling. Yet the experience of submitting a paper, responding to reviewer comments and navigating revision cycles can shape whether research reaches its audience promptly and whether early-career scientists, in particular, find the publishing system navigable. Editors honoured in this category are those judged to have made that experience more transparent and less adversarial.

The Author Service Award honourees associated with BMC Geriatrics include Alex Smithson, Bart Spaetgens, Bartłomiej K. Sołtysik, Chang Dae Lee, Chen Pao-Huan, Cheng Lei, Dario Calafiore, Dongshan Zhu, Fan Yang, Fengjuan Hu, Franziska Saxer, Gustave Mabiama, Hao Luo, Hui-Chuan Hsu, Ippei Chiba, Jaehoon Seol, Javier Jerez-Roig, Jonathan K. L. Mak, Kazuhiro Miyata, Krystal Warmoth, Lisa Kouladjian Odonnell, Luís Sousa, Monika Pathania, Peng Nie, Shiou Liang Wee, Shirin Vellani, Tsuyoshi Harada, Xuewen Wang, Yanfeng Jiang and Yeji Hwang. Several names appear on both lists, including Bart Spaetgens, Chang Dae Lee, Chen Pao-Huan, Hui-Chuan Hsu, Javier Jerez-Roig, Jonathan K. L. Mak, Kazuhiro Miyata, Krystal Warmoth, Shirin Vellani and Tsuyoshi Harada, indicating that these editors were recognised both for the rigour of their manuscript assessment and for the quality of their interactions with authors.

Behind such awards lies a structural reality of modern science publishing: the peer review system depends overwhelmingly on volunteer labour. Editors, particularly those serving on the boards of academic journals, typically perform their duties alongside full-time research, teaching and clinical commitments. They triage incoming submissions, recruit reviewers, adjudicate disagreements between authors and referees, and make the final judgement calls on publication. Because this work is largely unpaid and rarely counts toward career advancement metrics, publishers have increasingly turned to formal recognition programmes as one mechanism for acknowledging the contribution and encouraging retention of experienced editorial staff. Springer Nature frames its Editor of Distinction Awards as a celebration of editors who develop networks for authors and peer reviewers, help authors improve their papers and advocate for their journal communities.

The disciplinary context of these particular recognitions is noteworthy. BMC Geriatrics publishes research on the medical care of older people, covering topics from frailty and multimorbidity to rehabilitation, nursing interventions, falls prevention and the epidemiology of ageing. The field has grown rapidly as populations across East Asia, Europe and North America age, and its research output draws on a wide range of methodologies, from randomised clinical trials of geriatric interventions to large observational cohort studies and cross-national surveys of older adults. Assessing such a heterogeneous body of work demands editors who can evaluate statistical methodology, clinical relevance and ethical considerations relating to a vulnerable research population, all of which raises the stakes of careful editorial oversight.

The emphasis on scientific accuracy in the Editorial Contribution Award criteria also intersects with broader debates about the reliability of the published literature. Reproducibility concerns, paper mills and the pressures of publish-or-perish academic culture have prompted publishers to invest in stricter screening procedures, integrity checks and more transparent peer review models. Editors who manage peer review rigorously function as a first line of defence for the scientific record, deciding which manuscripts proceed to external review and ensuring that reviewer criticisms about methodology, statistics or overinterpretation of results are addressed before publication. Recognition programmes such as this one implicitly acknowledge that the integrity of science communication rests substantially on the diligence of individual editors rather than solely on automated screening tools.

The awards likewise spotlight the service-oriented, human dimension of scholarly publishing. Constructive peer review, in which editors guide authors toward clearer presentation of methods, more appropriate statistical treatment or more cautious framing of conclusions, can measurably improve published papers. Editors who cultivate reviewer networks, mentoring new reviewers and maintaining engagement with experienced ones, help sustain a pipeline of qualified assessors at a moment when reviewer fatigue is a widely documented problem across disciplines. For a journal embedded in a clinical field, where editors often balance hospital duties or academic teaching with editorial responsibilities, the recognition carries particular weight as a public affirmation that this labour is valued by the research community it serves.

For the researchers, clinicians and peer reviewers whose work passes through BMC Geriatrics, the 2026 Editor of Distinction Awards serve as a signal of continuity: the journal’s editorial apparatus remains staffed by individuals formally recognised for assessment rigour and author care. The full lists of honourees across Springer Nature’s portfolio are published by the publisher, and both award categories will continue in subsequent years as part of the company’s annual recognition cycle. As discussions about the future of peer review continue, from open review experiments to AI-assisted screening, programmes that name and celebrate the individual editors behind the process offer a reminder that, at its core, scientific publishing remains a human system built on judgement, service and trust.
