The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is breaking new ground with its latest project funded by the Smart Traffic Fund, aimed at revolutionizing temporary traffic management. The university has secured approximately HK$3.578 million to develop an intelligent traffic signal control system specifically designed for one-lane-two-way temporary traffic arrangements, a common scenario during roadworks on narrow streets in Hong Kong. This innovative system promises to enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion issues caused by such temporary setups.

Led by Professor Edward Chung Chin-shin of PolyU’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the initiative focuses on integrating real-time sensing technologies to monitor traffic queues and flow dynamically. By leveraging advanced sensors, the system constantly gathers data on vehicle movement and waiting times, providing critical input for adaptive signal control algorithms. These algorithms then optimize traffic signal timings to respond instantaneously to fluctuating traffic demands, minimizing delay and preventing gridlock.

A core technical advancement of this project lies in its dynamic traffic flow model, which synthesizes real-time sensor data with predictive analytics. This model allows the system to anticipate traffic build-up and adjust signals preemptively, rather than reacting solely to current conditions. The result is a smoother progression of vehicles through temporarily constrained road sections, significantly reducing queuing and overall traffic disruption.

The outcome of the project will be a mobile prototype that offers unmatched flexibility for temporary traffic management. Unlike traditional fixed traffic light systems, this portable solution can be easily deployed and reconfigured to fit various roadwork scenarios. Its adaptive nature ensures that traffic signals are not only responsive but also optimized for the unique characteristics of temporary, narrow lane configurations prevalent in dense urban environments.

This development aligns with PolyU’s longstanding commitment to harnessing technology for vehicle-related innovation. With 33 projects previously supported by the Smart Traffic Fund, the university continues to contribute prominently to advancements in transportation engineering and smart traffic solutions. The Smart Traffic Fund itself plays a pivotal role in fostering local innovation aimed at improving commuting efficiency, road network usage, and safety.

The implementation of such intelligent systems reflects a broader trend of integrating artificial intelligence and real-time data analytics in urban traffic management. Across megacities grappling with congestion and limited infrastructure, these technologies offer scalable solutions that adapt to changing conditions without requiring costly physical interventions.

PolyU’s project not only addresses the pressing practical issue of managing temporary traffic disruptions but also exemplifies how adaptive control systems can enhance overall traffic efficiency and driver safety. As urban environments grow increasingly complex, innovations like this intelligent signal control system become essential tools for sustainable and intelligent transport ecosystems.
