A newly developed candidate reference material for angiotensin II could help laboratories compare measurements produced by different analytical methods. Researchers characterized the material using isotope dilution mass spectrometry and the mass balance method, assigning it a purity value of 0.8734 g/g with a relative expanded uncertainty of 1.8% at a coverage factor of k = 2. The two independent approaches produced closely consistent results, while tests also showed excellent bottle-to-bottle homogeneity. The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Biomedical Analysis, presents the material as an additional measurement benchmark for a peptide hormone involved in blood-pressure regulation and fluid-electrolyte balance.

The reference material was designed to address practical barriers surrounding existing angiotensin II standards. Similar international reference materials can be difficult for laboratories to obtain and may be limited by supply. A common reference material can serve as a calibration benchmark that laboratories use to validate methods, assess measurement performance and support quality control. By linking measurements to an assigned value with documented uncertainty, researchers and laboratories may be able to strengthen the traceability and comparability of angiotensin II results obtained across testing systems.

Stability testing showed that the candidate material remained stable for at least 12 months when stored at −20 °C. It also remained stable for at least seven days at 4 °C and at 25 °C under simulated transportation conditions. The researchers additionally compared their measurements with NRC ANG Ⅱ-1, a certified reference material from the National Research Council Canada. This comparison met the study’s accepted equivalence criterion, providing further support for the accuracy of the newly assigned value. The reported relative expanded uncertainty of 1.8% quantifies the uncertainty associated with the assigned purity value, with the result obtained at a coverage factor of two.

The work focuses on metrological properties rather than biological effects. Although angiotensin II is used as a biomarker in laboratory testing related to vascular disease, the investigators did not examine whether the new material retains activity equivalent to the hormone’s biological function in vivo. That question would require further study. The supported conclusion is therefore narrower: the characterized material provides an additional tool for method validation, quality control, performance evaluation and traceable measurement, potentially improving the comparability of angiotensin II test results among laboratories. It is not itself evidence of improved clinical outcomes or a clinical diagnostic benefit.
