Researchers report a modularly assembled electromagnetic interference shielding material that achieves high absorption and high shielding effectiveness at the same time, a combination that has been difficult to reach in a single design. The work, published in Advanced Composites and Hybrid Materials, presents an alternative to conventional Salisbury screens built on a modified electrospun TPU film.

The material uses a designed three-layer architecture. The top layer is a porous network of nanofibers wrapped with carbon nanotubes, which serves to match impedance. The bottom layer is a silver-coated nanofiber network that ensures complete reflection. Between them sits a precisely tuned intermediate layer whose role is to enhance destructive interference.

According to the study, the team systematically examined how the conductivity of the matching and bottom layers, together with interlayer thickness, governs the overall EMI shielding effectiveness and the share of absorption. The analysis identified the optimal synergy between impedance matching and interference cancellation and clarified the role of the conductive nanofiber network within the structure.

The resulting composite, designated C5/T4/A3, reached an EMI shielding effectiveness of 72.75 dB while reflecting only 0.04 of the incident wave. The design also delivered a low-reflection bandwidth of 3.40 GHz, with reflection below 0.1, covering 81% of the X-band.

Radar cross section simulations added a further dimension to the assessment.

A notable feature of the architecture is its modularity. The bottom layer is replaceable, which allows direct tuning of the shielding effectiveness by varying that layer’s conductivity, without changing the core mechanism of impedance matching and interference cancellation.

The authors state that the work provides guidance for designing absorption-dominated, high-performance EMI shielding materials. The study is published as open access research, shared early as a peer-reviewed, accepted version that is citable and carries a permanent DOI, subject to further edits before the final version of record.

The reported findings are drawn from the study’s abstract, which describes the design principles, the systematic parameter analysis, and the measured performance of the C5/T4/A3 composite. The abstract notes that the material addresses the challenge of achieving simultaneous high absorption and high electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness through its layered conductive nanofiber network.

With its combination of a carbon nanotube-wrapped matching layer, a tunable intermediate layer, and a replaceable silver-coated reflective layer, the reported design offers a modular route to absorption-dominant electromagnetic interference shielding, with the measured 72.75 dB shielding effectiveness and 81% X-band low-reflection coverage standing as the headline results of the study.
