FAU Awarded $21 Million Promise Neighborhoods Grant to Support Underserved Communities in Broward UP

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has made significant strides towards addressing systemic issues affecting education and community well-being in Broward County, Florida. The university has secured a groundbreaking $21 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Promise Neighborhoods program. This funding is expected to uplift areas historically burdened by poverty while facilitating access to quality education and community support, establishing a pathway to academic and professional success for local children.

Broward County faces a pressing challenge: the emergence of a significant number of homeless children, exceeding 6,000, as reported in the 2023-24 school year. Such abrupt figures reveal a deeper crisis, showcasing the severe impact of chronic absenteeism, mental health struggles, and nutritional deficiencies plaguing the youth. These interconnected issues create an entrenched cycle of poverty, stymieing educational achievement and thereby restricting social mobility within the community.

With the Promise Neighborhood initiative at the forefront of FAU’s response, the university aims to create opportunities for children and families from cradle to career. Comprehensive resources and support systems will be integrated into the community, fostering a well-rounded approach to child development. The "Broward Unlimited Potential Promise Neighborhood" (Broward UP) will serve as a transformative model for ensuring that students within these identified areas develop academically and socially.

As a pioneering step, this grant marks the largest sum awarded to FAU in its existence, reflecting the magnitude of the initiative. Following Broward College’s role as an innovator in this project, FAU is now poised to take charge of advancing educational access and equity within the region. Prominent collaborators in this mission include several key local organizations, such as the School Board of Broward County, Children Services Council of Broward County, and Community Foundation of Broward, all dedicated to amplifying the impact of the grant.

The collaborative nature of Broward UP encompasses faculties from multiple disciplines within FAU, particularly from the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice and the College of Education. These departments will rigorously engage in research endeavors aimed at substantiating the project’s goals. By implementing data-driven analytics, the initiative will be better equipped to monitor its effectiveness and ensure that defined objectives are being met. This methodology aligns with the overarching vision of creating a sustainable model of community success.

Research is indeed positioned as a foundational element of Broward UP’s strategy. FAU President Stacy Volnick emphasized the critical role of academic inquiry in realizing the initiative’s potential. Faculty researchers will lead efforts in data analysis, enabling them to understand community dynamics fully and inform effective interventions. This scholarly approach speaks to the necessity of evidence-based solutions to navigate the complexities faced by Broward Westside communities.

Moreover, specific neighborhoods within Broward County have been identified as focal points for the initiative, particularly areas burdened by high unemployment rates and historically low education attainment levels. By strategically aligning support services within these regions, Broward UP seeks to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. The goal is to transform these communities into viable avenues of opportunity by empowering families and facilitating access to essential resources.

Under the guidance of Dr. Gregg Fields, a prominent figure in research at FAU, the initiative is set to undergo revitalization and restructuring. His vision encompasses fostering collaborations across diverse sectors of the community, including government organizations, educational institutions, private sector stakeholders, and non-profit entities. This multifaceted approach illustrates the transformative potential of collective action, emphasizing united efforts to improve the lives of children and families.

Co-principal investigators have also been appointed to oversee areas of specialty within the program. Their diverse areas of expertise will play an essential role in tackling various challenges within the community. Research agendas will focus on crucial factors influencing educational outcomes, including strategies to enhance parental involvement, address attendance issues, and foster community health initiatives. Each targeted effort will aim at mitigating social barriers to educational success among Broward students.

Broward UP ultimately aspires to facilitate profound changes within the educational landscape. By engaging more than 14,000 students and their families, the program’s interconnected pipelines will attentively cater to varying educational needs. These pathways encompass early education, K-12 integration, and postsecondary support systems, nurturing an environment where students are equipped to thrive in various life stages and career trajectories.

Moving beyond traditional educational frameworks, Broward UP will incorporate innovative learning opportunities that cater to the community’s unique context. High school graduates and adults will benefit from varying instructional formats, including online courses and certification programs designed for high-demand job sectors. This flexible approach enables participants to attain necessary skills while ensuring they remain engaged in the learning process.

In conclusion, FAU’s implementation of the Broward UP initiative underlines the institution’s commitment to fostering social mobility through educational excellence. The recognition received from the U.S. Department of Education is indicative of the potential for systemic change, as it paves the way for constructive partnerships within the community. FAU’s proactive approach to addressing educational and social challenges underlines a promising future for Broward County’s youth and their families.
