A new journal has arrived at a moment when the science of information has quietly become the operating system of modern civilization. Discover Informatics, a peer-reviewed and fully open access journal published by Springer Nature, has officially launched with an inaugural editorial written by Ziyou Wu of Springer Nature in Shanghai and Maikel Leon of the Miami Herbert Business School at the University of Miami. Published on 10 June 2026 as Volume 1, article number 1, the editorial lays out an ambitious vision for a publication that aims to serve researchers, policymakers, and the public at the point where computing, cognition, and society converge. Unlike subscription-gated venues, every article the journal accepts will be freely available to anyone with an internet connection, a decision the editors frame as essential to the rapid dissemination of knowledge that advances both science and society.

The editorial opens with a sweeping historical arc, tracing informatics from its mid-twentieth-century origins in the need to manage and automate calculation. What began as a niche technical discipline devoted to data processing has, in the editors’ telling, matured into the sophisticated science of information synthesis. The digital revolution transformed how data is collected, stored, and analyzed, and in doing so repositioned informatics at the intersection of human cognitive capability and computational power. That framing is not merely rhetorical. It reflects a genuine shift in how the field understands itself: no longer a service discipline that merely moves numbers, but a foundational science that shapes how discoveries are made, how decisions are justified, and how institutions function.

Today, the editors argue, informatics functions as the connective tissue across diverse domains, driving critical breakthroughs in healthcare, climate science, governance, and economics. The tools of the field extract actionable insights from large, complex datasets, allowing researchers and policymakers to tackle global challenges with greater precision and speed. The statement arrives amid an extraordinary expansion of data-intensive science, where genomic sequencing, satellite Earth observation, electronic health records, and large-scale social data all demand methods that only informatics can supply. The launch of a dedicated open access journal for this space signals a recognition that the volume and importance of such work have outgrown the traditional publication channels that served the field in earlier decades.

Looking forward, the editorial identifies the discipline’s future as being defined by rapid intelligent integration and ethical stewardship. As artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and ubiquitous sensing redefine the boundaries of what is computable, the editors contend that informatics must guide the responsible, equitable, and transparent application of these technologies. Discover Informatics is launched at precisely this pivotal juncture, with the stated aim of becoming a premier venue for the cross-disciplinary dialogue that will shape this future, ensuring that the next generation of digital infrastructure serves the collective global good. The positioning is notable for how explicitly it ties technical innovation to accountability, placing ethics and governance alongside algorithms and infrastructure rather than treating them as afterthoughts.

The journal’s topical scope reflects that philosophy. Its coverage spans educational and social informatics, including learning analytics, digital education tools, digital transformation, and the role of informatics in public policy and societal development. A second domain encompasses environmental and geospatial informatics, systems biology, omics integration, and the development of workflows, metadata standards, and data curation practices for complex scientific datasets. These areas address some of the most practical bottlenecks in modern research, where the inability to standardize, annotate, and share data often slows scientific progress more than any shortage of analytical methods.

A third pillar addresses ethics, privacy, and trust in informatics, covering data privacy, regulatory compliance, ethical AI, transparency, bias mitigation, and frameworks for trust, auditability, and accountability in digital systems. The journal also dedicates a domain to health and clinical informatics, spanning bioinformatics, health data science, clinical information systems, electronic health records, digital health technologies, and decision support systems with an emphasis on usability and impact. Human–AI interaction and system interoperability form another focus, including accessibility, inclusive design, adaptive interfaces, intelligent systems, and human–AI collaboration with an emphasis on explainability. Finally, the journal covers software infrastructure and computational informatics, from cloud, high-performance, and edge computing to FAIR data principles, collaborative platforms, and reproducible scientific workflows.

Together, the editors write, these topics highlight the journal’s commitment to advancing informatics research that is methodologically rigorous, socially relevant, and aligned with global challenges, including contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. That alignment is more than a slogan in the open access context. By removing paywalls, the journal positions itself to reach researchers in institutions and regions that have historically been excluded from high-impact publishing, a structural concern that the Discover series has made central to its identity. The editors emphasize that the journal welcomes interdisciplinary research, applied studies, methodological advances, and work addressing real-world challenges across the full spectrum of informatics.

Behind the editorial vision stands an international Editorial Board composed of researchers with expertise spanning data science, artificial intelligence, computational systems, and domain-specific applications. Board members play an active role in both the strategic development and the day-to-day operation of the journal, overseeing peer review, handling submitted manuscripts, and ensuring rigor, fairness, and timeliness. They are also charged with promoting the journal within their communities, identifying emerging research directions, and proposing and guest-editing topical collections that capture evolving trends in the field. Reflecting the global and inclusive ethos of the Discover series, the board represents diverse geographic regions, career stages, and disciplinary perspectives, an intentional design choice meant to support interdisciplinary research on complex societal challenges. The journal is also actively recruiting new board members, offering early-career and established scholars alike a role in shaping its growth.

The invitation to contribute is framed as genuinely broad. The journal accepts a range of article types, including Research articles, Reviews, Brief Reports, Methodology papers, and Comments, in line with the editorial policies of the Discover series. Authors are invited to contribute to and propose Topical Collections that highlight key themes, foster collaboration, and bring together diverse perspectives on pressing topics, with these collections playing an important role in shaping the journal’s identity. The editors extend their welcome specifically to both established researchers and early-career scientists, encouraging them to join in building what they describe as a diverse, inclusive, and open research platform for the benefit of global communities.

For a field that has grown from automating arithmetic to shaping how humanity manages health, climate, governance, and knowledge itself, the arrival of a fully open access journal dedicated to the whole breadth of informatics is a meaningful milestone. Whether Discover Informatics succeeds in becoming the connective forum its founders envision will depend on the community it convenes and the standards it upholds, but its opening statement makes clear that the journal intends to treat informatics not as a technical specialty but as the shared infrastructure of twenty-first-century science. The inaugural editorial, and the journal it introduces, are freely available to read under open access terms, fittingly so for a publication whose founding premise is that the science of information belongs to everyone.
