China’s rapid digital transformation, often celebrated for powering economic growth and reshaping daily commerce, may also be quietly improving the health of hundreds of millions of people. A new peer-reviewed study published in BMC Public Health finds that residents living in cities with more developed digital economies report significantly better health, an association driven in part by higher subjective well-being, fewer depressive tendencies, and greater participation in physical activity. The findings arrive at a moment when governments worldwide are searching for evidence on whether digitalization, frequently blamed for sedentary lifestyles and screen addiction, can actually deliver measurable public health dividends.

The research, conducted by Xuhan Yang of the School of Physical Education at Henan University and Wenhao Ling of the Department of Philosophy and Public Administration at Henan University, sets out to answer a deceptively simple question: does digital economic growth translate into tangible health benefits for ordinary residents? To do so, the authors constructed a city-level digital economy development index for China and merged it with individual-level health data drawn from the 2016, 2018, and 2020 waves of the China Family Panel Studies, one of the country’s most comprehensive longitudinal household surveys. By combining macro-level indicators of digital development with micro-level self-reported health outcomes, the study is able to test whether people living in more digitally advanced cities genuinely feel healthier, not just whether digital sectors generate wealth.

The methodological core of the study is a two-way fixed effects model, a workhorse of modern econometrics that controls both for time-invariant characteristics of individual respondents and for common shocks occurring in each survey year. This design helps isolate the relationship between digital economy development and health from confounding factors such as personal background, local healthcare quality, or nationwide trends that might otherwise masquerade as a digital effect. The authors paid particular attention to mechanisms involving subjective well-being and depressive tendencies, and examined whether physical activity participation moderates the relationship between digital growth and health, an analytic choice that distinguishes the study from earlier work treating health as a simple downstream byproduct of economic development.

The headline result is strikingly consistent: digital economy development is significantly and positively associated with residents’ health. Quantitatively, each 1 percent increase in the city-level digital economy development index corresponds to an average increase of approximately 0.255 percent in residents’ self-rated health score. Put another way, a one standard deviation increase in the index, equal to 0.981 in the authors’ construction, corresponds to roughly a 0.25-unit rise in self-rated health. Self-rated health may sound like a soft outcome, but decades of epidemiological research have shown it to be a robust predictor of morbidity and mortality, making even modest shifts at population scale potentially meaningful for public health planning.

Crucially, the association survived an unusually thorough battery of robustness checks. The authors employed an instrumental variable test to address the possibility of reverse causality, that is, the concern that healthier residents might attract or accelerate digital development rather than the other way around. They also applied propensity score matching to compare otherwise similar individuals across differently digitalized cities, replaced the dependent variable with alternative health measures, and re-estimated the models using different regression specifications. The positive relationship held across all of these tests, lending considerable credibility to the central claim that digital growth and better health travel together.

Beneath the headline association, the study identifies two psychological channels that appear to carry much of the effect. Residents in cities with more developed digital economies reported significantly higher subjective well-being and significantly lower depressive tendencies, and both of these factors were in turn associated with better self-rated health. This pathway makes intuitive sense: digital platforms can expand access to services, reduce transaction costs, widen social connection, and create economic opportunity, all of which feed into mental states that shape how people experience and report their health. The finding is notable given widespread public anxiety that smartphones and digital services worsen mental health, particularly among young people. At the city level, at least, the aggregate picture in China points the other way.

The study also uncovers an important moderating role for physical activity. Individuals who participated in physical activity experienced a stronger positive association between digital economy development and their health, suggesting that the digital and physical spheres are complements rather than substitutes. In practical terms, digital tools, from fitness apps and online exercise communities to health monitoring and activity tracking, may amplify the health value of staying active, while digitalization without physical engagement yields smaller benefits. The authors argue that this complementarity should inform policy: advancing digital support for physical activity participation could be one of the most direct routes for converting digital growth into health gains.

Perhaps the most politically consequential finding concerns equity. The positive health association of the digital economy appears to be inclusive, and in fact more pronounced among socially disadvantaged groups and residents of less-developed regions. This pattern suggests that digitalization does not simply stack additional benefits on top of existing advantages for wealthy, urban, well-connected populations. Instead, it may narrow health gaps by extending services, information, and economic opportunity to people historically excluded from them. In a country where regional inequality remains a central policy challenge, the implication that digital infrastructure can function as a leveling force for health is likely to attract significant attention from policymakers.

The authors are careful to frame their conclusions within the limits of the data. The analysis covers 2016 to 2020, a period spanning the pre-pandemic boom and the early COVID-19 era, when digital adoption accelerated dramatically across China. Self-rated health, while predictive, remains a subjective measure, and the mechanisms linking digitalization to well-being are examined through observed survey indicators rather than direct physiological measurement. Still, the convergence of the econometric evidence, the robustness checks, and the coherent mediation and moderation results gives the study unusual weight for research in this space, and its publication through open access ensures that the evidence is freely available to researchers and policymakers globally.

The policy implications outlined by the authors are concrete. They call for strengthening digital health infrastructure, including the connectivity and platforms needed to deliver health services and information at scale. They propose establishing a multilevel digital mental health support system, reflecting the study’s evidence that well-being and depression are key mediating channels. They recommend advancing digital tools that encourage physical activity participation, leveraging the complementarity the data reveal. And they urge adherence to inclusive development, ensuring that the health dividends of digitalization reach disadvantaged groups and lagging regions rather than concentrating among the already advantaged.

Beyond China, the study speaks to a global debate about the health consequences of the digital age. Critics have long warned that digital life promotes sedentary behavior, social isolation, and mental strain, while proponents point to telemedicine, health information access, and digitally enabled economic opportunity. This research adds empirical ballast to the optimistic side of that debate, at least in the context of a rapidly digitalizing middle-income country. It suggests that the digital economy should be understood not only as an engine of GDP growth but as a potential instrument of public health governance, one whose benefits operate through psychological well-being and physical activity and whose distribution can be shaped by deliberate policy choices.

As digital transformation accelerates across the developing world, the Chinese experience documented by Yang and Ling offers a template for how researchers elsewhere might measure the health returns of digitalization, and a warning that those returns are not automatic. Without investment in mental health support, physical activity infrastructure, and inclusive access, the link between digital growth and health could weaken or reverse. With them, the authors conclude, the digital economy may become one of the most powerful and underappreciated forces for improving population health in the decades ahead.
