In the contemporary discourse on sustainable urban development, the integration of digital technology and ecological principles emerges as a transformative frontier. A groundbreaking study delves into how the convergence of the digital economy and industrial ecologization synergistically propels eco-urbanization within the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) urban agglomeration, a region emblematic of rapid economic growth and environmental challenges alike. Crucially, the study unpacks the mechanisms whereby digital economy integration reinforces eco-urbanization. Smart urban planning and management facilitated by digital tools allow for more efficient resource allocation, environmental monitoring, and pollution control. The promotion of green industries and clean technologies, supported by public participation platforms enabled through digital means, stimulate ecological enhancements alongside economic prosperity. These tools not only optimize current urban operations but also foster long-term resilience by encouraging adaptive and sustainable behaviors in city inhabitants and stakeholders.

Similarly, industrial ecologization nurtures eco-urbanization by embedding sustainability into production and economic processes. This involves reducing emissions, enhancing resource efficiency, and integrating circular economy principles, all augmented by digital platforms that enable sophisticated data monitoring and process optimization. The mutual reinforcement between DE and IEE creates a positive feedback loop where technological innovation drives ecological improvements, which in turn fuel economic growth with diminished environmental costs.

Another salient finding concerns the spatial correlation intensity and dependence types characterizing the YRD’s urban centers. The analysis delineates how advanced metropolitan areas manifest stronger spatial linkages supporting digital-green integration, fostering clusters of innovation and green technology deployment. Such clustering accelerates collective learning and diffusion of best practices, reinforcing these cities as engines of eco-urban sustainability. Peripheral and less connected urban localities, however, experience weaker spatial correlations, thereby slowing down their eco-urbanization impetus.

The amplification of digital and ecological synergies also hinges on policy coordination and regional collaboration. The study highlights platforms for eco-innovation collaboration that cut across administrative borders within the YRD, promoting green finance mechanisms and industrial upgrading aligned with sustainable development goals. This orchestrated effort positions the region to capitalize on digital economy agglomeration benefits while propelling industrial transformation focused on low carbon footprint and environmental stewardship.

Despite its comprehensive approach, the research acknowledges several limitations and avenues for future inquiry. The measurement frameworks for digital economy strength and eco-urbanization currently rely on a select set of representative indicators due to data constraints and the lack of consensus on standardized metrics. This limitation calls for more multifaceted and integrative data acquisition efforts, encompassing a broader range of digital and ecological variables for more robust and nuanced assessments.

Furthermore, the study signals the need to incorporate threshold and dynamic effects into analytical models. As the digital economy and eco-urbanization relationship may be non-linear and contingent on specific economic and infrastructural thresholds, future research endeavors should deploy advanced modeling techniques, such as dynamic spatial effect models and panel threshold regression, to unearth these complexities. Unraveling temporal variations and non-linear dynamics will augment our understanding of how digital-green integration evolves and impacts urban sustainability over time.

The temporal coverage of the study, spanning from 2011 to 2022, offers valuable historical insights but leaves the future trajectory largely unexplored. By integrating machine learning algorithms and predictive modeling, subsequent research could simulate future patterns and scenarios, offering foresight into how digital economy developments and industrial ecologization will continue shaping eco-urbanization. This approach would equip policymakers and urban planners with strategic tools to navigate uncertainties and optimize sustainable urban growth.

In essence, this study illuminates the critical role of digital and ecological integration in redefining urban futures in mega agglomerations like the Yangtze River Delta. It lays bare the intricate spatial heterogeneity of such integration and underscores the importance of tailored policies to ensure inclusive and equitable urban transformation. By harnessing digital innovation alongside industrial ecological reform, cities within the YRD can transcend conventional development paradigms and set benchmarks for sustainable metropolitan evolution worldwide.

The implications extend far beyond the YRD region, serving as a blueprint for other rapidly urbanizing global contexts where economic dynamism often challenges environmental sustainability. The demonstrated synergistic effects emphasize the potential unleashed when digital advances align with ecological imperatives, inspiring a holistic urban development framework that enriches human well-being while safeguarding natural ecosystems.

This intersection of cutting-edge digital technology and environmental consciousness represents a frontier for research, practice, and policy. It beckons a new era of sustainable urbanism, where cities become living laboratories for innovation, resilience, and ecological harmony. The Yangtze River Delta’s journey embodies this promise, revealing pathways to achieve balanced co-evolution between humanity and nature in the face of 21st-century challenges.

As smart city initiatives and green strategies accelerate, continuous monitoring, adaptive management, and inclusive governance will be indispensable to manage the disparities and harness the full potential of digital-green fusion.
