Popular children’s biographies that celebrate scientists may be doing more harm than good, according to new research from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Analyzing 422 bestselling books, a team led by educational psychology professor Jessica Gladstone found that the narratives often frame scientific success in ways that can undermine motivation rather than build it.
The study focuses on how biography messaging shapes beliefs about ability and achievement. Using mindset theory, the researchers examined whether stories suggest that scientific talent is fixed and innate—or whether it can grow through practice, mentorship, and effective strategies over time.
While many books aim to inspire young readers through role models, the content frequently risks alienating groups that are already underrepresented in science, including girls and racial/ethnic minority children, as well as students who do not see themselves as “science people.” Notably, a sizable portion of the biographies failed to address the protagonist’s interest or ability at all, missing opportunities to deliver motivationally relevant cues.
When the books did discuss these factors, the team observed an imbalance: protagonists’ scientific interest was overwhelmingly portrayed as something that appears early or is hardwired, even when the authors also varied in how they depicted ability. The result can be an exclusivity signal—suggesting only a select few are born to succeed in science.
The researchers report that fields commonly viewed as requiring innate talent—such as physics, engineering, and computer science—showed the strongest alignment with fixed-ability messaging. By contrast, growth-oriented portrayals appear more likely to make scientific pathways feel achievable.
Another concern involved gendered framing. Across scientific domains, biographies about women scientists more often emphasized effort, compared with those about men, and this pattern persisted even after accounting for the domain. The study argues this can imply a higher “cost” for women’s success, reinforcing a motivational disadvantage.
To understand the context, the team coded the kinds of obstacles described in the stories—failure-related, social, and structural. These obstacle types related to effort narratives, but the gender disparity in how effort was portrayed remained significant, suggesting it is not explained solely by the biography plot structure.
Gladstone recommends that biographers tell truthful stories that still support kids’ motivation. In motivation-science terms, the most helpful biographies should be relatable, normalize learning and setbacks, and communicate that improvement in math and science comes from practicing and iterating after mistakes. The researchers highlight examples such as Ada Lovelace being portrayed as doing advanced math at age three, contrasted with a narrative describing Neil deGrasse Tyson developing interests gradually.
