African Engineering and Technology Network Welcomes Tenth University Partner

Carnegie Mellon University Africa has announced a significant expansion of the African Engineering and Technology Network (Afretec) with the addition of its tenth partner, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU). This milestone aligns with Afretec’s strategic vision to foster collaborative innovation across the African continent by uniting prominent technology-focused institutions. Founded in 2022, Afretec aims to catalyze the continent’s digital transformation through robust research initiatives, enhanced educational programs, policy influence, and entrepreneurship development.

The inclusion of Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, situated in Ethiopia’s burgeoning industrial and pharmaceutical sector, marks a pivotal expansion into East Africa’s dynamic tech landscape. Recognized as a hub for science, technology, research, and innovation, AASTU embodies Ethiopia’s aspirations for industrial growth and technological advancement. With this partnership, Afretec consolidates a network that encompasses institutions spanning North, South, East, West, and Central Africa, fostering a wide-ranging and inclusive technological ecosystem.

Afretec’s network currently comprises distinguished universities such as Carnegie Mellon University Africa (Rwanda), Agostinho Neto University (Angola), and Al Akhawayn University (Morocco), among others. These institutions collectively represent a formidable corpus of African engineering and tech expertise. The addition of AASTU enhances this collective, drawing from Ethiopia’s rapid digital economy growth and progressive pan-African policy frameworks. Such diversity enriches the network’s ability to address multifaceted challenges inherent to Africa’s technological development.

Central to Afretec’s mission is its rigorous research agenda, supported by nearly $7.43 million in funding allocated across more than 40 innovative projects. These ventures focus on a range of critical areas, including artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, renewable energy technologies, and data science applications tailored to African contexts. The network’s emphasis on peer-reviewed dissemination and international conference participation underscores its commitment to elevating African research on global platforms.

Afretec’s educational initiatives are equally transformative, particularly its bridge programs designed to equip undergraduate students for advanced graduate studies. With over 2,000 undergraduates trained, these programs address skills gaps and nurture the next generation of African technology leaders. Additionally, nearly 500 faculty members have engaged in professional development sessions covering cutting-edge topics like AI integration in pedagogy, grant proposal writing, and overcoming sector-specific teaching challenges, fostering academic excellence throughout the network.

On the entrepreneurial front, Afretec pioneers a novel interface between academia and the startup ecosystem through its TechSkills Marketplace. This scalable model enables students to contribute technical expertise to emerging ventures, providing practical experience and entrepreneurial exposure. By connecting burgeoning talents with real-world challenges, the program not only fuels innovation but also creates sustainable career pathways critical for Africa’s economic diversification and resilience.

AASTU’s distinctive position within Ethiopia’s Kilinto industrial zone amplifies its strategic value. Established in 2011, the university aligns directly with national priorities to drive industrialization, STEM education, and technological innovation. Its role as a center of excellence facilitates interdisciplinary research that integrates principles of engineering, computer science, and industrial technology, dovetailing seamlessly with Afretec’s continental ambitions.

The collaboration between these universities within the Afretec framework exemplifies a new paradigm of pan-African technological development—one rooted in co-creation, knowledge exchange, and policy advocacy. By leveraging complementary strengths across geographical and disciplinary boundaries, the network is well positioned to influence digital infrastructure policies, data governance frameworks, and science education curricula at both national and regional levels.

Carnegie Mellon University Africa, the network’s custodian, remains a central pillar in these efforts. Established in partnership with the Government of Rwanda in 2011, CMU Africa is unique as a U.S. research institution operating entirely on African soil with a dedicated faculty and research agenda. This integration ensures research outputs and educational programs are contextually relevant and geared toward addressing acute continental challenges, particularly the shortage of elite engineering talent.

The synergy fostered within Afretec extends beyond academia into the broader socio-economic fabric of African countries. By aligning research and educational programs with entrepreneurial pipelines, the network creates an ecosystem that can sustain innovation-led growth. This model holds promise not only for digital transformation but also for broader industrial upgrades, including manufacturing automation and smart systems deployment in agriculture and healthcare.
