AI Composed Almost 25% of Corporate Press Releases in 2024

In recent years, the landscape of written communication has undergone a profound transformation, largely driven by the advent of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. These sophisticated artificial intelligence tools are now making their mark across various sectors, facilitating the production of text that closely mirrors human language. According to a study published on October 2, 2025, in the esteemed journal Patterns, the incorporation of AI-generated content has reached an average of 17% across analyzed corporate and governmental communications in a mere span of two years. This rising trend indicates a future where AI’s role in content creation is set to become even more pronounced.

The study’s corresponding author, James Zou, a prominent researcher at Stanford University, emphasizes the significance of this comprehensive review. Their investigative effort sheds light on the adoption patterns of AI writing assistance not only in the corporate arena but also in various domains, including education and governmental communication. The team utilized an AI detection program they previously developed to evaluate the text generated by AI across crucial communication contexts: consumer complaints, corporate press releases, United Nations communications, and job postings.

Starting with consumer complaints, the research revealed some compelling insights. Analyzing over 687,000 complaints submitted to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the researchers found that approximately 18% of these grievances were likely crafted with the help of AI. This statistic underscores the growing reliance on AI tools to articulate consumer concerns and navigate the often complex realm of financial disputes. The role of AI in this context raises essential questions about authenticity and the human touch in voicing grievances.

Turning to corporate communications, the study focused on major news release platforms, including Newswire, PRWeb, and PRNewswire. The findings were striking: since the launch of ChatGPT, nearly a quarter of all releases on these platforms have been identified as AI-generated. This surge in AI usage, particularly prevalent in science and technology sectors, reveals a shift in how corporations choose to communicate their news and updates, as they increasingly leverage AI tools for efficiency and impact.

When exploring the job market, the disparity between large and small companies became evident. While major firms on platforms like LinkedIn appeared less inclined to utilize AI in their job postings, smaller companies showed a different trend. The researchers discovered that AI assistance was marked in about 10% of postings from smaller corporations. This trend points to a democratization of AI technologies where smaller entities can harness AI to enhance their visibility in an overcrowded employment market.

A significant focus of the research was the United Nations’ press releases. The analysis revealed a noteworthy increase in AI-assisted writing, surging from just 3% in early 2023 to over 13% by late 2024. This upward trajectory raises critical discussions about the implications of using AI in diplomatic communication and its potential to shape international discourse.

Overall, the researchers observed that the proportion of content flagged as primarily AI-written has spiked dramatically, soaring from 1.5% before the release of ChatGPT in November 2022 to an impressive 15% by August 2023. Although the growth rate subsequently slowed, the current adoption rate rests at approximately 17% as of August 2024. These findings indicate an undeniable shift in the reliance on AI-driven tools for content generation across diverse writing contexts.

Zou highlights the limitations of their AI detection tool and points out that the estimates may appear conservative. The detector struggles to distinguish between texts that undergo extensive human editing and those that are predominantly AI-generated. This nuance is crucial as organizations increasingly use AI tools to enhance productivity while still requiring a human oversight layer to ensure quality and accuracy.

As the research showcases the rapid adoption of AI writing tools, the question looms: what are the implications of this shift? Zou underscores that while AI models have the potential to assist in overcoming barriers in written communication, they still come with inherent flaws. Miscommunications and inaccuracies can arise if users blindly rely on AI and fail to scrutinize its outputs. This necessitates a critical understanding of the limitations of AI-generated content and the importance of maintaining a balance between automation and human oversight.

Looking forward, Zou anticipates that the adoption rates of AI in writing will continue to rise, albeit at a more measured pace compared to the explosive growth witnessed in the initial years. This evolution signifies a transformative moment in how society engages with language models, opening the door to both opportunities and challenges. The tension between leveraging the efficiency of AI and preserving the authenticity and creativity inherent in human expression will remain a central theme as we navigate this brave new world of AI-assisted writing.

As we progress into this new era shaped by technology, it remains imperative that individuals and organizations alike remain vigilant and critically engaged with the tools they employ. The trajectory of AI in communication is still unfolding, and striking the right balance will be key in maximizing its benefits while minimizing the risks associated with over-reliance on artificial intelligence.

The integration of AI language models into various communication sectors marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of written discourse. As we stand at the forefront of this transformative change, it is crucial to foster a nuanced understanding of how these tools can augment our communication rather than replace the fundamental human element that lies at its core. The possibilities are vast, but the future will depend on how responsibly we harness the power of AI to enrich rather than undermine our collective voice.
