●Abbreviated name of university
- Japanese: Kagaku-dai
- English: Science Tokyo
The abbreviated name of the university, Science Tokyo, reflects a cordial community that welcomes new ideas and people. It immediately identifies our commitment to science and indicates the university’s geographical location, a hub where new science is pioneered and shared with the world.
Science Tokyo logo
The Science Tokyo logo is the primary graphic symbol of the university. It always includes a combination of the Science Tokyo seal, i.e. the “Science S,” and the logotype “Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO.”
Science Tokyo seal: Science S
The “Science S” is the seal of Institute of Science Tokyo. The two arches at the top and bottom represent our philosophy of scientific advancement and human wellbeing, as well as the heritage of the two historic universities joining forces. The arch in the center firmly connects the two. Together, these components form a single fluid stroke flowing dynamically from bottom left to top right. This continuous flux expresses the spirit of inquiry that allows us to integrate knowledge and technology, and our desire to co-create together with society.
Logotype
The logotype “Institute of SCIENCE TOKYO” uses a clear, legible font to ensure a polished, professional design. It emphasizes our geographical location and desire to spearhead the advancement of science. The same English logotype will be used at home and abroad to enhance and accelerate recognition globally.
The guidelines for the use of the Science Tokyo logo, seal, and logotype are being prepared while considering ease of use for stakeholders. The release of these guidelines is being planned for the opening of Institute of Science Tokyo.

Community effort to create Science Tokyo identity and brand
Since the Institute of Science Tokyo Brand Action! project began, over 6,000 university members and stakeholders have contributed to the desired direction and identity of Science Tokyo. With so many people, backgrounds, and perspectives coming together, clashes in opinion have been inevitable. After many careful rounds of discussion that all pursued the same goal — the creation of a new university unlike any other — a philosophy and logo that encapsulate the community’s views and passions were born.
At the start of the project at Tokyo Medical and Dental University’s Ochanomizu Festival and the Tokyo Tech Festival in October 2023, visitors voted on their image of the new university. Many chose the adjectives “steady and rational” to describe Science Tokyo students, but others also opted for “daring and passionate.” These early opinions foreshadowed the challenges that lay ahead when creating a new philosophy for the university.
In subsequent workshops, participants consolidated Science Tokyo’s intended aims and values, and agreed on “scientific advancement” and “human wellbeing” as paramount pillars of the new university.
The Science Tokyo logo and brand color were created to symbolize the university’s desired direction and the ideas that its community members value. The brand color, Science Blue, and the Science Tokyo seal, were born thanks to opinions collected from over 400 individuals who participated in a branding survey.
The new university’s philosophy and the Science Tokyo logo are packed with the hopes and aspirations of many unique individuals. These verbal and visual elements, which draw on both the cherished traditions and forward-thinking spirit of the two partnering universities, aim to provide the world with a tangible glimpse into the soon-to-be-born Institute of Science Tokyo.
