Polar amplification, the intensified near-surface warming seen in high latitudes relative to the global average, does not respond uniformly to climate change in the two hemispheres. A study published in Communications Earth & Environment reports a substantial inter-hemispheric contrast in how polar amplification depends on the underlying climate state, drawing on climate model simulations of both future warming and distant past warm climates.

The analysis indicates that both the amplitude and the seasonality of Arctic amplification weaken considerably in future climates in which the Arctic becomes sea ice-free. According to the authors, a similar feature is inferred from a paleoclimate data assimilation product. This convergence between simulations of the future and evidence from warm periods in Earth’s deeper past suggests that the strength of Arctic amplification is closely tied to the extent of sea ice cover, and that it may decline as that cover disappears.

The picture is not without complications. In simulations of distant past climates, the researchers found pronounced cloud-related uncertainties in summer-season Arctic amplification. The authors note that these cloud-related uncertainties need to be resolved, even as the broader agreement between future and distant past warm climates strengthens the overall conclusion.

Antarctic amplification presents a different profile altogether. Across both future and distant past warm climates, the intensity and seasonality of Southern Hemisphere polar amplification are generally weaker than their Arctic counterparts and are also less sensitive to the prevailing climate state. The study’s central implication is that the inter-hemispheric contrast in polar amplification is likely to weaken as the Arctic approaches sea ice-free climates. If Arctic amplification loses amplitude and its seasonal character shifts while Antarctic amplification remains comparatively stable, the two poles would converge in their warming behavior. The findings reported here are model- and reconstruction-based estimates rather than observed outcomes, and the cloud uncertainties identified for past warm climates remain an open challenge for constraining summer Arctic behavior.
