Ionis Pharmaceuticals, based in Carlsbad, California, has taken the top honor in the Science and Science Careers 2026 Top Employers Survey, an annual ranking of the world’s most respected employers in the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and pharmaceutical industries. The rankings will appear in the October 22, 2026, print issue of Science and online at ScienceCareers.org. The survey was conducted by an independent research firm commissioned by the Science/AAAS Office of Publishing, and the responses were analyzed by The Brighton Consulting Group.

The 2026 survey polled employees across biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, and related industries to determine the 20 best employers and the characteristics that drive their reputations. Respondents to the web-based survey were asked to rate companies on 24 characteristics spanning categories such as corporate image, financial prowess, leadership and direction, and work culture and environment. The findings draw on more than 5,100 completed surveys from readers of Science and other survey invitees.

The respondent pool was geographically concentrated in North America, which accounted for 71% of those surveyed, followed by Europe at 19%, Asia and the Pacific Rim at 6%, and other locations at 4%. A large majority of respondents, 89%, worked in biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and pharmaceutical companies, meaning the rankings reflect the views of people working directly within the industries being assessed rather than the general public.

The analysis used a mathematical process to determine the driving characteristics of a top employer and to assign a unique score to each company’s employer reputation. Each company received a ranking on criteria such as whether it is an innovative leader in the industry and whether it treats employees with respect. As in the 2025 edition of the survey, which examined themes including innovation, artificial intelligence, and policy in biotech and pharma, the 2026 survey sought to identify the companies with the best reputations as employers. The complete feature, along with individual company rankings, is available at Science.org.
