A computational method for identifying salient objects in optical remote-sensing images significantly outperformed 21 state-of-the-art comparison approaches across three benchmark datasets. The study, published in Applied Intelligence, introduces a Sine Function-guided Master–Slave Collaborative Network that combines a Transformer branch for global information with a convolutional neural network branch for local information, using sine-function modulation to coordinate the two encoders.

Salient-object detection in remote-sensing imagery is complicated by the need to extract meaningful objects with irregular shapes from complex backgrounds. The researchers describe cross-architecture information interaction as a central challenge for modern detection models. Their proposed design addresses that challenge with an adaptive sine bridging mechanism and a master–slave architecture, rather than treating the Transformer and CNN encoders as independent feature producers.

In the master–slave collaborative encoder, the Transformer encoder serves as the master and is responsible for modeling global information. The CNN encoder operates as the slave, supplementing the Transformer representation with local information through an adaptive weight set below one. A sine-function modulation term guides the outputs of the slave encoder, with the stated aim of reducing feature redundancy between the two encoders. The architecture therefore assigns the two branches different roles while allowing their information to interact within the same detection network.

Two modules refine and combine features on the master branch. The multi-scale difference–local extraction module, abbreviated MDLM, is designed to locate salient regions and refine their details. The bidirectional weighted-guided fusion module, or BWGF, guides the fusion of features across levels by using fused information as weights. On the slave branch, a directional frequency attention module, called DFAM, enhances horizontal and vertical directional information in features. The authors state that this component supports modeling of irregular global topologies.

The evidence is limited to computational evaluation on three benchmark datasets, where the complete model was compared with 21 state-of-the-art methods. The supplied study abstract does not report dataset names, numerical effect sizes, computational cost, runtime, robustness tests or results from real operational deployments. It also does not establish that the comparative advantage is specifically greater for irregular targets or for objects embedded in complex backgrounds, despite those conditions being identified as motivations for the work. Accordingly, the results support the benchmark performance of the proposed architecture but do not by themselves demonstrate broader benefits in other sensors, geographic settings or application environments.
