SPIE announced on 10 September 2026 that M. Emre Celebi, a professor and chair of computer science and engineering at the University of Central Arkansas, has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of Electronic Imaging. His term begins on 1 January 2027. The peer-reviewed journal is co-published by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, or IS&T. Celebi’s appointment places an established researcher in artificial intelligence and image processing at the helm of a publication that has operated since 1992 and has published 5,096 papers to date.

Celebi’s technical background includes color-space transformations, compression, image enhancement, quality assessment, segmentation, feature extraction, classification, clustering and content-based retrieval. The Journal of Electronic Imaging publishes papers that apply directly to or focus on electronic imaging technology. Its stated research areas include artificial-intelligence algorithms, remote sensing, adaptive image processing and quantum imaging. The journal appears every two months and uses a peer-review process. The announcement does not report a new experiment or evaluate how any particular imaging method performs; it concerns the leadership and direction of a scholarly publication serving researchers in electronic imaging and related fields.

Celebi received his PhD in computer science and engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in the United States and is an SPIE Fellow. Before the appointment, he served as an associate editor for both the Journal of Electronic Imaging and the Journal of Medical Imaging. He also guest edited special issues for JEI. His prior association with the publication includes editorial work in both its formal leadership roles and its special-issue activities, providing relevant experience for his new position as editor-in-chief.

Celebi described the journal as having a “long, distinguished history spanning three and a half decades.” Looking ahead to his term, he said, “I look forward to leading this journal and further enhancing its integrity, quality, scientific impact, and efficiency.” These statements identify the priorities he named for his leadership, although the announcement does not set out specific editorial initiatives, performance targets or schedules for implementing them.

For SPIE, the appointment comes as electronic imaging continues to evolve and create opportunities for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Gwen Weerts, SPIE’s Director of Publishing Operations, said Celebi’s background in artificial intelligence, image processing and academic publishing positioned him to guide JEI through that period. She described SPIE as delighted to have him as editor-in-chief and looked forward to the fresh ideas and vision he would bring to the journal’s next chapter. The move gives a long-running journal a new editorial leader beginning in 2027, while the source material remains limited to the announcement of his appointment, his background, the journal’s publication record and the priorities stated by its incoming editor-in-chief and publisher.
