The upcoming PREPSOIL webinar, set for February 13, 2025, presents an invaluable opportunity to explore the vital connection between soil literacy and youth engagement within the broader context of environmental stewardship. Central to the goals of the Mission Soil initiative are efforts aimed at enhancing soil literacy across EU Member States. Christina Lundström from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) will introduce the goals of the Mission Soil initiative and highlight PREPSOIL’s imperative call for innovative soil education practices. This introduction will set the stage for further discussions on the need to enhance youth access to the natural world, a theme to be elaborated upon by Fredrika Mårtensson, also from SLU. Mårtensson’s presentation will underscore the importance of fostering a sustainable relationship between young individuals and their environment, emphasizing soil literacy’s pivotal role in this connection.

Additionally, the webinar will celebrate pedagogical excellence through presentations from winners of the PREPSOIL 2024 competition. These winners, representing innovative soil education approaches, will provide firsthand accounts of their methodologies and successes. For example, Katie Smirnova will showcase her project, “Love Your Wellies,” which creatively engages students with soil conservation concepts, while Erika Guerrini’s project, “The Soil to Educate,” will offer insights into integrating soil health education into broader learning objectives.

Addressing the urgent need for increased soil literacy, the PREPSOIL webinar recognizes that soil is often neglected in environmental education discourse. In an age where modern lifestyles may increasingly alienate youth from natural ecosystems, it’s crucial to cultivate their understanding of soil’s vital contributions to both the environment and their daily lives.
