As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have unveiled a bold five-year national initiative aimed at strengthening America’s innovation pipeline. The program is designed to expand collaboration across universities, industry, and government while improving intellectual property (IP) education and accelerating commercialization outcomes.

The partnership centers on three coordinated efforts: the American Innovation Campaign, the National Invention Ambassadors Network, and Innovation and Economic Competitiveness Workshops. Together, these components are intended to move inventions from lab discovery toward real-world societal and economic impact by aligning research, patent strategy, entrepreneurship support, and workforce development.

A key technical challenge in technology transfer is the “translation gap,” where promising research fails to become deployable products due to unclear ownership, weak IP readiness, or limited access to commercialization expertise. By scaling IP education and mentoring, the initiative targets earlier-stage decision-making—helping inventors structure disclosures, evaluate patentability pathways, and connect with technology transfer professionals.

The NAI-USPTO effort also emphasizes measurable improvement in commercialization performance. Workshops and regional convenings are expected to improve outcomes by strengthening networks among inventors, licensing teams, startup partners, and funding organizations—reducing friction in how technologies are evaluated and adopted.

Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, President of the NAI, framed the initiative as ecosystem strengthening across the full innovation journey. He highlighted that national competitiveness increasingly depends on robust frameworks that protect IP while enabling breakthrough technologies to generate durable public benefit.

USPTO leadership echoed this systems approach through a Joint Partnership Agreement focused on expanding access to IP education and inventor support. The USPTO expects stronger pathways that unite invention, commercialization, and economic growth, reinforcing U.S. leadership in innovation.

The founding coalition includes prominent organizations spanning academia, commercialization, entrepreneurship, and innovation policy. Among them are the Association of American Universities (AAU), AUTM, and NSF’s I-Corps Hub network, alongside groups focused on venture creation and intellectual property advocacy.

Over the next phase, NAI plans to name inaugural National Invention Ambassadors, launch an NAI Innovation Alliance, and introduce new national awards that recognize excellence in philanthropy, mentorship, and intellectual property education. Additional strategic partnerships are also expected to broaden impact across the innovation ecosystem.
