Purdue Student Entrepreneurs Awarded $50,000 Grant by Purdue Innovates Incubator

In the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem at Purdue University, a series of student-led startups have recently captured significant attention by clinching a collective prize of $50,000 at the prestigious 2026 New Venture Challenge. This annual event, meticulously orchestrated by the Purdue Innovates Incubator, embodies the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and equipping aspiring entrepreneurs with the critical tools necessary for launching successful ventures in competitive markets.

The New Venture Challenge is structured as a rigorous six-workshop program, designed to immerse participants in real-world entrepreneurial practices including crafting compelling value propositions, devising go-to-market strategies, and constructing financial models that appeal to potential investors. This comprehensive training ensures that the startups emerging from the program are well-prepared not only to attract funding but also to execute viable business plans that can sustain long-term growth in challenging economic environments.

Competition among participants was fierce, with 25 teams initially entering the challenge and ten teams advancing to the finals. During the culminating event, these finalists demonstrated their innovative technologies and business models through detailed expo booths before delivering concise yet impactful pitches. The final presentations, evaluated by expert judges, demanded precision and clarity within a tight timeframe of five minutes, followed immediately by a rigorous three-minute question-and-answer session.

Emerging as the top victor was echoSURE Inc., a medical technology startup devoted to enhancing patient safety through a novel device designed for accurate verification of feeding tube placement in pediatric patients. Addressing a critical gap in clinical procedures, echoSURE’s innovation promises to mitigate delays that can compromise patient care, while simultaneously reducing healthcare costs by improving procedural efficiency—a vital breakthrough in medical device technology.

Following closely was VitaWave Tech Inc., whose team is tackling the pervasive challenge of hypertension monitoring. Their development of a cuffless, in-ear blood pressure monitoring system capitalizes on advanced sensor technology and signal processing algorithms to facilitate intermittent yet continuous remote monitoring. This device is poised to vastly improve the management of hypertension for millions of patients by offering a clinically accurate, user-friendly alternative to traditional blood pressure cuffs, thus aligning with modern trends in telemedicine and personalized healthcare.

In third place, CalcGPT harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and interactive visualization tools to revolutionize mathematics education. By blending chat-based tutoring with dynamic platforms like Desmos and virtual whiteboards, CalcGPT transcends rote answer delivery to foster deeper conceptual understanding and active learning. Such integration of AI-driven educational technology points to a significant shift in pedagogical methodologies, focusing on engagement and adaptive learning experiences tailored to diverse student needs.

Kova Group Inc., awarded for Best Pitch, presents a student-exclusive ridesharing application designed to optimize short-distance travel within and between college campuses. Their platform emphasizes transparency, affordability, and safety through verified user bases and per-seat pricing models. This approach not only meets the demand for sustainable urban mobility solutions but also cultivates a trusted community environment, embodying principles of shared economy and digital trust networks.

Beyond the winners, the finalist roster featured a remarkable diversity of innovation. Oppit introduces an industrial Internet of Things solution that retrofits conventional manufacturing equipment with affordable wireless sensors to enable real-time data analytics and performance monitoring. This transformation of legacy systems exemplifies the ongoing Industry 4.0 wave, promising enhancements in operational efficiency and predictive maintenance practices within manufacturing sectors.

Originix is pioneering a digital supply chain platform tailored for specialty grain milling. By centralizing contracts, sourcing documentation, and relationship management, the platform addresses fragmentation in agricultural supply chains. The integration of multiple data streams into a cohesive system not only streamlines operations but also facilitates data-driven decision-making, potentially accelerating transparency and accountability in agricultural commerce.

In the energy sector, Rothalion is developing a next-generation microturbine based on rotating detonation combustion principles. This technology achieves pressure-gain combustion, leading to higher power density and efficiency. Such advancements in compact, fuel-flexible generators play a pivotal role in meeting the increasing demands for modular and dispatchable power, especially within data center infrastructures and microgrids aiming for sustainability and resilience.

Strctr offers a cutting-edge construction estimation platform leveraging vector databases and Work Breakdown Structures to automate material takeoffs and cost estimations. This innovation transforms a traditionally manual and error-prone bidding process into a highly accurate and time-efficient system, aligning construction project management with modern data management and automation trends.

UltraSense introduces an innovative wearable designed for water sports enthusiasts, combining durable saltwater-resistant materials with ultraviolet exposure monitoring. The companion app integrates personalized threshold settings to alert users, reinforcing awareness and promoting health safety in outdoor activities—a growing market niche at the convergence of wearable technology and environmental health monitoring.

UPlate applies generative AI to optimize dining choices in university dining halls based on individual dietary restrictions and nutritional goals. By analyzing diet-related academic literature, UPlate offers dynamically generated meal recommendations, embodying the forefront of personalized nutrition technology and AI-driven lifestyle enhancement tools.
