Sparkling Water Boosts Mental Sharpness During Extended Esports Sessions

In the realm of competitive esports, prolonged sessions often lead to a decline in cognitive performance, manifesting as mental fatigue and impaired decision-making ability. Such fatigue can severely undermine a player’s precision and speed, particularly affecting executive control—the mental process that enables individuals to regulate attention, inhibit distractions, and execute complex tasks. Recognizing these detrimental effects, researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan have conducted a groundbreaking study that explores a novel, health-conscious approach to mitigating cognitive fatigue inherent in extended periods of esports play.

The study, recently published in Computers in Human Behavior Reports, probed the physiological and cognitive impacts of consuming sparkling water versus plain water during protracted virtual soccer game sessions. Unlike sugary or caffeinated beverages traditionally favored to combat tiredness, sparkling water offers a unique sensory stimulus without the health drawbacks associated with sugar or stimulants such as caffeine. Scientists hypothesized that the characteristic carbonation-induced throat sensation could engage neurophysiological pathways linking the brainstem and prefrontal cortex, thereby sustaining executive function and mental sharpness.

The experimental design employed was a randomized crossover model involving 14 young adult participants who played a virtual soccer game for three consecutive hours on two separate days. During one session, participants consumed sparkling water, while on the alternate day, they were given plain water. Continuous monitoring of physiological markers alongside subjective self-reports allowed for a comprehensive assessment of mental fatigue and cognitive capacity throughout gameplay.

Advanced eye-tracking measures recorded pupil diameter changes, a well-established biomarker of cognitive load and fatigue. Concurrently, heart rate was monitored to evaluate autonomic nervous system responses. The study also incorporated biochemical analysis by periodically measuring interstitial glucose levels and salivary cortisol, aiming to detect metabolic or stress-related influences during prolonged stimulation. Executive function was evaluated using a flanker task that gauged participants’ ability to discern congruent and incongruent stimuli, thus testing sustained attention and inhibitory control during bouts of cognitive challenge.

Results revealed a compelling distinction between the two hydration strategies. Consumption of sparkling water notably reduced subjective feelings of fatigue and enhanced the enjoyment of gameplay, critical factors in esports where prolonged motivation affects performance. Objective measures aligned with these self-reports: participants exhibited diminished pupil constriction—a marker traditionally linked to cognitive weariness, suggesting more robust mental engagement. Importantly, improvements in flanker task performance were observed under the sparkling water condition, underscoring the beverage’s effect on preserving executive function.

Additionally, players drinking sparkling water committed fewer fouls throughout their virtual matches, indicating a tangible improvement in adherence to game rules and situational awareness. Offensive and defensive performance metrics—such as scoring rates or successful interventions—remained statistically unchanged, emphasizing that sparkling water’s benefits targeted cognitive regulation rather than raw gameplay skill enhancement. Physiological measures such as heart rate, glucose, and cortisol levels showed no significant differences between conditions, ruling out metabolic or stress hormone fluctuations as contributing factors.

These findings present sparkling water as a promising alternative to energy drinks and sugary sodas frequently consumed by gamers to stave off mental fatigue. By engaging sensory pathways linked to executive control without introducing sugar or caffeine, sparkling water may maintain cerebral alertness and cognitive precision during extended esports sessions, potentially fostering healthier behavioral patterns within this growing population.

From a neuroscientific perspective, the study enriches understanding of how non-nutritive sensory stimulation can influence higher-order cognitive processes. The carbonation sensation likely activates brainstem circuits that modulate prefrontal cortex activity, aiding in sustained attention and decision-making. This suggests a novel mechanism beyond traditional dietary stimulants by which hydration choices can impact cognitive fatigue.

Furthermore, the observed relationship between pupil constriction and slower reaction times in the flanker task supports the utility of pupillometry as a non-invasive and dynamic index of cognitive fatigue. This holds promise for developing real-time monitoring tools to assess mental states in esports athletes and optimize in-game strategies or breaks for performance preservation.

The research benefits from robust interdisciplinary collaboration, combining expertise in physiology, neuroscience, and sports sciences. It was supported by funding from Asahi Soft Drinks Co., Ltd., as well as Japanese governmental programs aimed at fostering innovation in health and sports sciences. The study exemplifies a translational approach, seeking practical interventions that could be easily integrated into daily life and esports culture while addressing health concerns linked to excessive sugar and caffeine intake.

Moving forward, broader studies with larger and more diverse cohorts will solidify these preliminary findings and explore differential effects across various esports genres and intensities. Additionally, longitudinal research could assess whether habitual sparkling water consumption yields sustained cognitive benefits or influences broader health outcomes for professional gamers.

In the evolving landscape of competitive gaming, where milliseconds and micro-decisions dictate outcomes, simple behavioral modifications like choosing sparkling water over traditional stimulants might confer meaningful cognitive advantages. This study opens new avenues for enhancing mental resilience in esports while promoting healthier hydration habits—potentially shaping industry-wide best practices and consumer behaviors.

As mental fatigue remains a significant barrier to peak performance in digital sports, such approaches combining neuroscience insights with practical application underscore how everyday choices can substantially influence complex cognitive functions. This work not only highlights sparkling water’s unexpected efficacy in mitigating cognitive fatigue but also advances the broader dialogue on optimizing human performance through integrative, evidence-based lifestyle interventions.
