The University of São Paulo (USP), a pivotal institution in Brazil, is set to host an advanced educational initiative titled the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on University, Memory, and Reparation. Scheduled to occur between July 1 and July 11, 2025, at USP’s main campus in São Paulo, Brazil, this program represents a confluence of academic inquiry into social memory, justice, and historical reparations. It aims to investigate the significant role that universities can play in these complex dialogues, an essential commentary in today’s global sociocultural landscape.

The impetus for this school stems from an urgent need to bridge academic research with real-life reparative processes, recognizing the university’s critical position as a facilitator for memory retention and social reparation efforts. Participants will delve into the multifaceted implications of how academic institutions can serve as stewards of memory and justice, engaging with pertinent historical archives and collections that hold profound social significance. By hosting this project, USP underlines its commitment to fostering inclusivity and belonging, as well as its dedication to the academic exploration of pressing contemporary issues.

With a lineup of prominent speakers, including internationally acclaimed scholars and practitioners such as Gabi Dolff Bonekamper from TU Berlin, Leslé Honoré from Urban Gateways in Chicago, and Mandy Sanger from the District Six Museum in Cape Town, the school promises a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives. These experts will facilitate discussions that illuminate the intricate relationships between memory, justice, and social healing, enriching participant understanding of these complex topics.

Supporting this endeavor, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) has committed resources through its São Paulo School of Advanced Science Program (SPSAS).
