New Study Cautions Charities on Using AI as an ‘Empathy Shortcut’

A recent investigative report emerging from the University of East Anglia (UEA) has shed critical light on a significant and underexplored repercussion of artificial intelligence technology within the charity sector. As global humanitarian budgets constrict and demands for accelerated campaign delivery intensify, an increasing number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and charities have turned to AI-generated imagery as a seemingly expedient solution. However, this research warns that the employment of AI in visual storytelling—especially in sensitive humanitarian appeals—may imperil the foundational trust these organizations depend upon, engendering complex reputational risks that extend well beyond initial impressions.

The study, titled Artificial Authenticity, meticulously analyzed 171 AI-generated images alongside over 400 public comments from campaigns led by prominent global institutions, including Amnesty International, Plan International, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). What the findings reveal is a profound shift in the dynamics of public engagement: the incorporation of artificially generated visuals appears to divert discourse away from the core humanitarian issues towards debates about the authenticity and ethicality of the technology itself. This pivot not only dilutes the emotional connection critical to donor support but also threatens to overshadow the very causes these charities strive to illuminate.

At the heart of the study is the observation that nearly 70% of AI images deployed in charitable campaigns were crafted to appear photorealistic. The thematic focus of these images heavily leaned towards impoverishment, with poverty-related visuals constituting approximately one-third of the dataset. These often included portrayals of children, a demographic traditionally eliciting substantial empathetic responses from audiences. Environmental issues and human rights themes followed in prevalence. Despite transparency initiatives—wherein 85% of these images were appropriately captioned as AI-generated—this labeling did not inoculate organizations against public skepticism or criticism, indicating a nuanced resistance from donors and viewers towards accepting AI-crafted depictions in this sensitive context.

Crucially, the research highlights a notable alteration in audience interaction where campaigns did not disclose the use of AI imagery. In these cases, viewers adopted an investigative posture, scrutinizing the material primarily for signs of artificiality and authenticity rather than focusing on the issues being presented. This shift signifies a fundamental disruption in how individuals process and relate to charity communications when uncertainty about the origins of the images becomes a focal concern. The investigation also uncovered a phenomenon termed “message-medium misalignment,” illustrated by instances such as WWF Denmark receiving backlash for employing energy-intensive AI technologies to promote environmental sustainability, provoking accusations of hypocrisy from a climate-conscious public.

This dialectic extends deeper when considering ethical tensions between storytelling and dignity. For some organizations, synthetic visuals have been posited as innovations enabling the preservation of beneficiary privacy and protection against potential retraumatization inflicted by conventional photography or filming processes. Yet, this protective rationale faces pushback from donors who prioritize visual authenticity—seeking a direct, “witnessed” connection over the safeguarding concerns of subjects. The tension underscores a complex challenge: the prioritization of ethical representation while maintaining credibility and emotional resonance with supporters.

Further compounding this complexity, the public response to AI’s role in charity communications emerges as multifaceted and ambivalent. While certain audiences welcome AI-generated imagery as a hopeful means to avoid exploitation and manipulation of vulnerable populations, others critique it as a superficial distraction, particularly in emotionally charged campaigns revolving around crises like famine or cancer. This bifurcation illustrates that the deployment of AI tools in humanitarian storytelling cannot be decoupled from broader societal debates surrounding authenticity, technological ethics, and emotional engagement.

Statistical insights from the public commentary analysis underscore these sentiments quantitatively. Among the comments reviewed, 141 centered explicitly on ethical considerations and authenticity related to AI usage; 122 addressed technical proficiency and visual quality; notably, fewer than 20%—a mere 80 comments—engaged substantively with the humanitarian content itself. This stark disparity underlines how AI imagery can inadvertently eclipse the narratives of human suffering and resilience, redirecting attention towards the medium rather than the message.

The study’s co-authors emphatically advocate for conscientious integration of AI within charity communication workflows. They emphasize that future success will hinge not primarily on technological advancement but on an organization’s capacity to sustain legitimacy, transparency, and moral coherence in an era characterized by heightened media literacy and public skepticism. Moreover, they stress the importance of ethical prompt engineering education for communications teams, warning that misuse or uninformed applications risk reputational damage and reinforce unintended biases.

Practical guidance emerging from the research proposes industry-specific AI tools incorporating built-in mechanisms for bias detection, stereotype alerts, and ethical guardrails tailored expressly to the humanitarian sector’s representational sensitivities. Additionally, the study calls for participatory approaches whereby local communities are actively involved in the conceptualization and approval of AI-generated content. Such co-creative processes aim to ensure that imagery is both accurate and culturally appropriate, thereby fostering authenticity through collaborative human oversight alongside artificial intelligence.
