The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific society. Its mission is to “Advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all.” The AAAS publishes a number of prestigious scientific journals through their Science family of titles. The organization recently held elections for its leadership positions. This year, NCSA’s director, Bill Gropp, was elected as Council Member of the Section on Information, Computing, and Communication.

Gropp began his term on March 15 and will continue to serve as Council Member for the remainder of the year, along with all the newly elected officials. His duties include serving as an official elector of AAAS Fellow nominees from all 24 sections as a member of the Council, as well as serving as a de-facto ambassador for AAAS.

AAAS serves a vital role in advocating for science and in informing policymakers and the public about science and its impact on society. Computing and data, especially but not only AI and ML, are transforming science and society, and it is more important than ever that the AAAS speak up for both the opportunities and the risks in applying computing technologies.

–Bill Gropp, Director, NCSA

As a Council Member, Gropp will be able to continue his already robust efforts to collaborate with experts at the highest level. At AAAS Council meetings, Gropp will have opportunities to share his expertise and experience in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and computer science (CS) in general, building upon his work as a thought leader in the fields of HPC and CS.
